About the role

 Description of Positions:

  1. Managing Editor: The managing editor will be central to The S&B, working closely to assist the editors-in-chief and the editorial team. They are responsible for a mix of operational, mentorship and editorial duties, and attend weekly meetings with Editors-in-Chief, DSA supervisor and journalism advisor whenever available. Operational duties involve strengthening The S&B’s print products, web design, and capacity for multimedia projects. Editorial and leadership duties include guiding staff writer/photographer/illustrator teams on developing at least one investigative/beat project per semester. Must be able to keep track of staff progress towards producing at least one investigative piece per semester. 
  2. News Editor: News editors are responsible for overseeing day-to-day news stories, typically within the scope of the Grinnell College community. These stories can include the coverage of events, the announcement of information, or the investigation into a situation. News editors are also responsible for leading the breaking news team, ensuring timely stories are published on deadline.
  3. Community Editor: The community editor is responsible for overseeing stories related to the town of Grinnell and the people and places outside of the Grinnell College community. This includes city council and school board meetings, Grinnell-Newburg School District news, and the businesses and restaurants in the surrounding area.
  4. Features Editor: The features editor is responsible for overseeing stories that feature a person, event, place, or historical memory. This often includes cultural events on campus, historical deep dives, and stories that peel back what life is like for people at Grinnell.
  5. Arts Editor: The arts editor is responsible for overseeing stories relating to visual arts, fine arts, and music. This often includes concerts, performances, exhibitions, and artist talks, both on campus and in town.
  6. Sports Editor: The sports editor is responsible for overseeing stories that cover the Grinnell College sports teams and everything that surrounds college athletics. This often includes previewing seasons, athlete profiles, and reflections on the triumphs and failures of sports teams.
  7. Opinions Editor: The opinions editor is responsible for overseeing the opinions page, which is meant to be a place for members of the campus and town community to respond to S&B articles or provide their opinion on a given topic. The opinions editor is also responsible for spearheading staff editorials and organizing back-page content like comics, humorous polls, and crosswords.
