Design Engineer - Product Development, Waring
About the role
Position Summary:
The Design Engineer will help shape the next generation of culinary products by applying strong engineering fundamentals, creative design thinking, and hands-on CAD and prototyping skills. The role creates and develops mechanical and electromechanical designs for assigned products and works closely with Industrial Design, Project Engineering, Marketing, Product Validation, Product Certification, Global Engineering, suppliers, and manufacturing partners to turn concepts into production-ready designs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create mechanical and electromechanical designs for culinary products from concept through production release, balancing performance, quality, cost, and manufacturability.
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, 2D drawings, and BOMs, applying GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
- Translate customer, industrial design, and business requirements into engineering specifications and design solutions.
- Design parts for injection molding, die casting, sheet metal, machining, and other applicable manufacturing processes.
- Build, test, and refine prototypes, using engineering analysis such as FEA, thermal, and fluid analysis to make sound design tradeoffs.
- Lead and participate in design reviews, presenting design concepts, analysis results, risks, and recommendations.
- Collaborate with Industrial Design, Project Engineering, Global Engineering, suppliers, and manufacturers to refine designs for tooling and production.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers, promoting strong CAD practices, design standards, and engineering fundamentals.
- Partner with Validation and Certification teams to define design verification tests and ensure designs meet performance, safety, and compliance requirements.
- Analyze test results, identify root causes of design issues, and implement design improvements.
- Support tooling reviews, DFM feedback, and pilot builds, resolving design-related production issues and managing engineering change documentation.
- Apply DFM/DFA principles to optimize designs for quality, cost, manufacturability, serviceability, and reliability.
- Explore emerging technologies, materials, mechanisms, and design tools, and incorporate customer, field, and service feedback into product improvements.
- Share lessons learned and contribute to CAD standards, design guidelines, and engineering best practices.
Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline; advanced degree or relevant training is a plus.
- 5+ years designing heated or motorized culinary equipment, appliances, electromechanical products, or durable goods.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD, such as SolidWorks or Creo, and PDM/PLM systems, with strong drawing and GD&T skills.
- Experience designing mechanical or electromechanical systems involving heating, motors, controls, sensors, sheet metal, plastics, castings, or fabricated components.
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and DFM/DFA, including injection molding, die casting, stamping, and machining.
- Experience taking designs from concept through prototyping, validation, tooling, and production release.
- Experience designing for durability, sanitation, continuous-duty operation, and serviceability.
- Experience with engineering analysis tools such as FEA, tolerance analysis, or thermal simulation.
- Experience collaborating with industrial designers, global suppliers, contract manufacturers, and cross-functional teams.
- Familiarity with product safety and sanitation standards such as UL, NSF, and CSA.
- Ability to solve complex design problems, communicate technical decisions, and balance performance, quality, cost, and schedule.
Compensation:
Conair has established a good faith salary range for this position. The salary range reflects the Company's reasonable expectation for the role at the time of posting and is based on a variety of factors including business needs, market conditions, candidate qualifications, experience, skills, and internal equity. The anticipated base salary range for this position is $110,000 to $120,000 annually.
In addition to base salary, this position is eligible to participate in Conair's annual bonus program. Conair also offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental and vision coverage; short- and long-term disability insurance; paid parental leave; paid time off; 11 paid holidays; two paid volunteer days; employee product discounts; and a 401(k) plan with employer contributions. Eligibility for certain benefits may vary based on employment status and plan terms.
Environmental Factors:
This role is performed in a professional office environment and requires prolonged periods of sitting, working on a computer, and using standard office equipment. The position follows Conair's hybrid work model, requiring on-site presence at the Stamford, CT office Monday through Thursday, with the flexibility to work remotely on Fridays.
