Senior Director of Transportation and Logistics

Department: Logistics Support
Reports To: Senior Vice President of Transportation and Logistics
Positions Supervised: 2–3 managers, with supporting routing and logistics planning teams beneath them in York and Wilmington
FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Type: Full-Time

Job Summary

The Senior Director of Transportation and Logistics leads the enterprise central routing and logistics planning function, with teams in York and Wilmington serving 39 distribution sites, a fleet of more than 350 CDL power units, and 335 CDL driver positions.

This enterprise-level role owns how the network is routed, scheduled, and promised to customers. The Senior Director is accountable for the service outcomes delivered against the plan, including on-time delivery and other key service performance indicators.

The role leads the delivery-visibility and customer-notification agenda, drives the adoption of routing and optimization technology across the network, and integrates acquired operations into the routing and planning model as the organization grows.

This position does not manage field transportation operations. It works alongside:

  • The Senior Director of Transportation Management, who owns network design, transportation systems strategy, freight-sourcing governance, carrier and third-party logistics strategy, and analytics.
  • The Director of Fleet Operations, who owns drivers, district operations, and daily fleet execution.
  • The Director of Equipment and Maintenance, who owns transportation assets, vendor-managed maintenance, the maintenance profit and loss statement, and the DOT and FMCSA system of record.

This role owns the delivery plan, customer promise, and service outcome. The Senior Director leads cross-functional corrective action when service failures extend across organizational boundaries.

As a senior leader, this position is expected to model and reinforce the PrimeSource BluePrint by leading with Care, Winning Together, Working Hard, Working Smart, and Working Fast.

Essential Job Functions

Strategic Responsibilities

  • Own the enterprise central routing and logistics planning function serving 39 distribution sites, a fleet of more than 350 CDL power units, and 335 CDL driver positions.
  • Own enterprise on-time delivery and service key performance indicators, including delivery-day adherence, delivery failure rates, and customer service recovery.
  • Own the customer delivery promise, including delivery days, service lead times, order cutoff times, delivery windows, and delivery-date promising standards.
  • Own customer-to-distribution-center assignments, optimal delivery-day design, and protected service lead times across the network.
  • Own the delivery-visibility and customer-notification agenda, including real-time order status, estimated arrival times, proof of delivery, and proactive exception alerts. Commercial features built on that layer, including pricing, promotions, reorder capabilities, and suggestive-selling capabilities, are owned by Sales and Information Technology.
  • Drive the selection, adoption, and scaling of routing and optimization technology across the network, with quantified cost and service benefits.
  • Establish the enterprise service-governance rhythm, including operating reviews, root-cause analysis, corrective action, accountable owners, and verified closure across Fleet Operations, Equipment and Maintenance, distribution centers, and Sales.
  • Lead the integration of acquired operations into the enterprise routing and planning model, including delivery planning, service standards, and carrier transitions.
  • Partner with Sales and commercial leadership on delivery policies, customer service commitments, and the cost-to-serve implications of customer delivery requirements.

Key Responsibilities: Operational Oversight and Strategic Governance

  • Direct the central routing and logistics planning teams in York and Wilmington, including route construction, sequencing, load planning, delivery scheduling, standard work, and planner development.
  • Own routing master-data discipline, including customer delivery parameters, service windows, geocoding, territories, and route definitions.
  • Own order-to-delivery process integrity, including order-entry cutoff times, delivery-date assignments, and the reduction of service failures caused by order-entry issues.
  • Tender and assign loads to carriers and third-party providers within the approved plan and within the carrier portfolio, contracts, and rate structures owned by Transportation Management and Procurement. Report carrier delivery performance through the jointly owned carrier scorecard.
  • Provide routing, volume, delivery-density, and service-requirement information to support dedicated-versus-common fleet mix and fleet-sizing decisions owned by Transportation Management, Fleet Operations, and Equipment and Maintenance.
  • Own the enterprise service-performance narrative by segmenting late and failed deliveries based on controllability across routing, fleet execution, order entry, and material availability. Drive corrective action with the accountable function.
  • Own closed-loop planning by comparing the plan against actual performance, identifying variances, and incorporating lessons learned so routing and sourcing recommendations continually improve.
  • Own routing and delivery planning for peak, holiday, and seasonal demand, including advance customer notification and protection of published lead times.
  • Direct out-of-network and interfacility order sourcing through the standard process, ensuring orders are sourced from the optimal distribution center.
  • Serve as the business process owner for routing, optimization, and delivery-visibility capabilities. Maintain accountability for business requirements, user acceptance, adoption, and data discipline, with Transportation Management serving as the system owner for the roadmap, configuration standards, and integration.
  • Deliver routing-driven productivity improvements, including improvements to stops per route, miles per stop, route density, and empty-mile reduction. Provide validated savings to Fleet Operations and Finance for realization within the transportation operating budget.
  • Serve as the senior escalation point for delivery-plan failures, at-risk service commitments, and significant customer delivery exceptions.

Leadership and Influence

  • Champion the PrimeSource BluePrint through daily leadership and decision-making, creating a culture of Care, Winning Together, Working Hard, Working Smart, and Working Fast across the central routing and logistics planning organization.
  • Build, mentor, and develop the central routing and logistics planning organization with clearly defined roles, goals, succession plans, operating rhythms, and accountability for results.
  • Lead change management for routing centralization, optimization technology adoption, and delivery-visibility implementation, ensuring stakeholder alignment, field adoption, and measurable service outcomes.
  • Build strong partnerships with Fleet Operations, Equipment and Maintenance, Transportation Management, Transportation Safety, distribution center leadership, Sales, Customer Service, Finance, and Information Technology.
  • Operate within clearly defined organizational boundaries:
    • Equipment and Maintenance owns transportation assets, vendor-managed maintenance, the maintenance profit and loss statement, and the DOT and FMCSA system of record.
    • Fleet Operations owns drivers, district operations, and daily fleet execution.
    • Transportation Management owns network design and modeling, scenario and footprint analysis, acquisition network modeling, data integration, the reporting source of truth, the systems roadmap, freight-sourcing governance, and carrier and third-party logistics strategy and contracting.
    • This role owns the delivery plan, customer promise, service outcome, carrier execution against the plan, and cross-functional corrective action.
  • Apply the standing rule at the boundary with Transportation Management: Transportation Management models the network and determines what it should be; this role operationalizes that design, maintains it as conditions change, and executes it through daily and weekly planning.

Technical and Analytical Direction

  • Direct the consistent application of routing and optimization platforms, Transportation Management System capabilities, telematics, and delivery-visibility data in daily and weekly planning.
  • Ensure routing and delivery data accuracy, disciplined process execution, and effective controls. Report performance against the metric standards and reporting source of truth established with Transportation Management.
  • Drive structured problem-solving, root-cause analysis, corrective action, and continuous improvement across routing, delivery planning, and service performance.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Twelve or more years of progressive leadership experience in transportation, routing, delivery planning, logistics, or distribution operations within a multisite or national network, including demonstrated experience leading other leaders.

  • Deep knowledge of final-mile service models, delivery-promise and lead-time design, and service-performance management.
  • Working familiarity with carrier and third-party logistics models and dedicated-versus-common fleet economics.
  • Demonstrated success improving service outcomes through cross-functional governance in an environment where transportation assets and drivers report to other functions.
  • Experience integrating acquired operations is preferred.
