About the role

This Lead Medical Support Assistant works for the Medical Administration Service in the inpatient ward and emergency room of the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System located in New Orleans, Louisiana providing leadership to Medical Support Assistants .

The Lead Medical Support Assistant is responsible for coordination of administrative functions associated with the care and treatment of patients on the inpatient wards. Duties may include but are not limited to: Distributes and balances the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow or job specialization; assures timely accomplishment of the assigned workload and that each employee has ample work to keep productive. Keeps in touch with the status and progress of work, and makes day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities, obtains assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise such as backlogs which cannot be disposed of promptly. Estimates and reports on expected time of completion of work and maintains records of work accomplishments and time expended and prepare production reports as requested. Instructs employees in specific tasks and job techniques and makes available written instructions, reference materials and supplies. Gives on the job training to new employees in accordance with established policies and practices. Maintains current knowledge and answers questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc., and obtains needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that arise. Checks on work in progress and reviews completed work to see that supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Amends or rejects work not meeting established standards; refers to supervisor questions or matters not covered by standards and problems in meeting performance standards. Responds to changing priorities and redistributes workload accordingly. Monitors working conditions such as seating, ventilation, lighting, and safety. Resolves informal complaints of employees and refers others to supervisor. Reports to supervisor on performance, progress and training needs of employees, and behavior problems. Provides information to supervisor as requested concerning promotions, reassignment, recognition of outstanding performance, and personnel needs. Informs employees of available services and employee activities. Orients staff to admissions, procedures and software requirements. Advises Veteran and non-veteran applicants of their entitlements to various medical benefits and co-payment requirements of discretionary categories based on congressional law mandates. Assures patient appointments, eligibility status, and Means Tests to determine patient's fiscal responsibility are completed correctly. Work Schedule: Typically, Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. with rotating weekends and holidays. Schedule subject to change based on the needs of the facility. Telework: Not Available.
