About the role

Senior Accountant

Ensure Accuracy. Solve Problems. Drive Results.

As our Senior Accountant, you will play a key role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of Stinker’s financial information while helping strengthen the processes behind it. This experienced accounting position independently manages key accounting activities, including account reconciliations, journal entries, accounts receivable, electronic payment activity, accruals, allocations, and other general ledger responsibilities.

This role goes beyond completing assigned accounting tasks. The Senior Accountant is expected to take ownership of issues, critically evaluate problems, develop practical solutions, and help drive matters through to resolution. You will work closely with the Corporate Controller and Finance Team to support month-end and year-end close, maintain strong accounting controls, research and resolve financial discrepancies, and identify and implement opportunities to make our accounting processes more accurate, efficient, and scalable.

As a senior member of the accounting team, you will also serve as a resource to others by sharing knowledge, providing guidance, helping solve complex accounting issues, and promoting consistent and effective accounting practices across the department.

We value collaboration, innovation, accountability, and people who continuously look for better ways to serve our employees, guests, and communities. If you enjoy taking ownership, solving problems, improving processes, and turning ideas into results, we'd love to meet you.

What You Will Do

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly balance sheet reconciliations, research discrepancies, identify root causes, and drive outstanding items through timely resolution.
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes by completing assigned accounting activities accurately and within established deadlines, while proactively identifying issues that could impact the close or financial results.
  • Submit and reconcile fuel vouchers and other amounts due from outside agencies.
  • Take ownership of accounting issues and projects, determine appropriate next steps, engage the right stakeholders, and help drive matters through to conclusion.
  • Research financial activity, identify trends, discrepancies, or issues, critically evaluate available information, and develop practical solutions and recommendations.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and accounting controls to support accurate financial reporting and audit readiness.
  • Proactively identify and implement opportunities to simplify and streamline accounting processes, strengthen controls, improve accuracy, reduce manual work, and increase efficiency.
  • Challenge existing processes when appropriate and help develop better, more scalable ways of accomplishing accounting and finance objectives.
  • Serve as an accounting resource to team members by sharing knowledge, providing guidance, and supporting consistent accounting practices.
  • Help lead accounting initiatives and cross-functional projects by organizing issues, following up on outstanding items, removing obstacles, and maintaining momentum toward completion.
  • Partner with Finance and other departments to resolve accounting questions, develop solutions, and communicate financial information clearly.

You'll Thrive Here If You...

  • Bring strong accounting knowledge and take ownership of accurate, reliable work.
  • Are naturally proactive and look for what needs to be done rather than waiting to be told what to do.
  • Take ownership of problems and follow them through to resolution, even when the solution is not immediately obvious.
  • Think critically, ask good questions, evaluate alternatives, and use sound judgment to recommend solutions.
  • Work independently while recognizing when collaboration or escalation is appropriate.
  • Look beyond the immediate task to understand root causes and identify opportunities to make processes better.
  • Stay organized and manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines with strong attention to detail.
  • Are comfortable helping lead initiatives, coordinating with others, and keeping work moving toward completion.
  • Adapt to changing priorities, systems, and processes and help others navigate change effectively.
  • Build collaborative relationships and communicate effectively with both financial and non-financial audiences.
  • Demonstrate integrity and discretion when handling confidential financial information.

About Stinker

Founded in 1936, Stinker is a family-owned convenience retailer serving communities throughout Idaho, Colorado, and Wyoming.

We got our name in a fight. In 1936, a 20-year-old named Farris Lind opened a service station in Twin Falls and started selling gasoline for less than the major oil companies thought he should. They didn’t take it well. When one of them told a newspaper that Farris Lind was a real stinker, he took it as a compliment, put the word on his stations, and drew a skunk wearing red boxing gloves (Polecat Pete).

So, the gloves came first, and they were never a joke. Fearless Farris put them on because he spent his career punching above his weight on behalf of the customer, and because a small Idaho company that refuses to be pushed around must be willing to fight for what it believes in. Ninety years later, that’s still the job. We fight for our employees. We fight for our guests. That’s what sets us apart, and it’s what we look for in the people we hire.

Our purpose is simple:

To make our world a better place by being a bright spot in the lives we touch, one employee, one guest, and one community at a time.

We believe our success starts with our people. That means developing others, building trust, welcoming new ideas, recognizing contributions, holding ourselves accountable, and having the courage to do what’s right.

We still know how to have fun; our mascot is a skunk, after all. But take a close look at Pete: he’s got his gloves on.

  • Experience supporting month-end and year-end close processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently take ownership of problems, projects, or accounting matters and drive them through to resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and implement process improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy, or control.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including working with formulas and large data sets.
