National Avalanche Specialist
About the role
This position is located at a Forest Service office. Location is negotiable after selection. The incumbent works as a National Avalanche Specialist with the Forest Service National Avalanche Center. This position has responsibilities for leading complex, high priority, special projects related to all aspects of the Forest Service's avalanche program. Assists the Director of the National Avalanche Center in the overall management of the program.
Consults with field units for all issues related to the military artillery for avalanche control program.
Provides field units the necessary documents and training so they can meet the various obligations of the program.
Coordinate Forest Service managed avalanche centers to facilitate their ability to provide consistent, high quality avalanche information and education to the public.
Produces avalanche awareness materials, works on educational websites, develops public and agency training
Responds to media inquiries and provides interviews related to avalanches at the local, national, and international level.
Provides consultation for field units for a variety of avalanche related matters
Reviews and evaluates avalanche hazard analyses for a variety of proposals on National Forest System lands.
Leads, develops, organizes, and implements complex special projects related to snow avalanches for field units.
Assists in the construction of national databases related to avalanche information and the coordination of various entities to get data into those databases.
Must be a U.S. Citizen or National. Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
