High School Sports Reporter - Central Massachusetts
MassLive, the largest news and information website in Massachusetts, is looking for an experienced high school sports reporter to help lead an expansion into Central Massachusetts as MassLive builds on its outstanding team and coverage to become a truly statewide authority in high school sports.
Based in Worcester, this writing-first reporter will own MassLive’s Central Massachusetts high school sports coverage, becoming the dedicated voice for the leagues, rivalries, schools and athletes that make the region one of the state’s richest high school sports markets.
This is an opportunity to build a beat, working alongside our High School Sports Editor and collaborating with our statewide high school sports team. You'll have the opportunity to develop your own voice, pursue original story ideas, establish recurring coverage franchises and help shape how MassLive covers high school sports in Central Massachusetts.
Beyond traditional game coverage, you'll have the opportunity to use MassLive's digital platforms to tell stories in different ways — from rankings, data and interactive content to short-form video, live coverage and on-camera reporting. The reporter will be responsible for all aspects of coverage, including rankings for teams and players, breaking news, enterprise reporting, feature stories and preview content. You'll also help shape MassLive's growing live-streaming coverage, identifying the games and storylines that deserve a statewide audience and contributing to select broadcasts and live coverage.
This position pays between $45,000 and $52,000 annually.
Ideal candidate will have the following:
- A degree in journalism or communication, or an equivalent education and work experience with proven ability in journalism reporting and writing.
- Minimum of two years of journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing required.
- Strong knowledge of Central Massachusetts high school sports, or the ability to quickly build trusted relationships with coaches, athletes, families and school communities across the region.
- Ability to work independently and remotely under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately.
- Solid understanding of news writing, reporting, journalistic ethics and story structure.
- Must be able to work nights and some weekends.
- Ability to learn and master the methods and applications used to deliver content across a variety of platforms.
- Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates MassLive from competitors.
- Mastery of social media and digital interaction.
- Bilingual and multilingual language skills are a plus.
- Ability to shoot, edit and publish short-form video content optimized for Instagram and mobile audiences.
- Comfortable appearing on camera for live hits, interviews, live streams and social media-first reporting; broadcast experience a plus.
