Looking for an entry-level opportunity with a clear career path and industry-leading training? Great West Casualty Company is seeking an Associate Underwriter to join our Small Business team. This role is ideal for recent graduates and early-career professionals who want to develop expertise in commercial insurance while learning from experienced underwriting professionals.

At Great West, we don't expect you to come in as an underwriting expert. We provide a comprehensive training program designed to help you build the technical knowledge, underwriting skills, and industry expertise needed to succeed. If you're analytical, customer-focused, and eager to learn, we'll give you the tools and support to launch a rewarding career in trucking insurance.

As an Associate Underwriter, you'll learn how to evaluate risk, make underwriting decisions, build agency relationships, and contribute to the profitable growth of our Small Business portfolio. You'll gain firsthand experience in one of the most unique and essential segments of the insurance industry: trucking and transportation.

What You'll Do

  • Review and evaluate new business applications, renewals, endorsements, and policy changes.
  • Analyze risk characteristics using underwriting guidelines, motor vehicle records (MVRs), carrier profiles, loss history, and other underwriting information.
  • Utilize QuikR8 and other underwriting tools to rate accounts, prepare quotes, authorize policy issuance, and establish new accounts.
  • Underwrite and determine appropriate pricing, coverage selections, and rates for endorsements and policy changes.
  • Complete underwriting forms, documentation, and checklists to support decision-making and ensure compliance with established guidelines.
  • Ensure policy coverages and issuance comply with internal audit standards, Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, and applicable insurance regulations.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with independent agents and insureds through phone, email, and written correspondence.
  • Consult with agents regarding policy coverages, driver qualifications, underwriting guidelines, and risk management considerations.
  • Assist agency partners with marketing initiatives, sales efforts, and customer service needs.
  • Troubleshoot underwriting and system-related questions while providing responsive service and support.
  • Represent Great West professionally at industry events, agency meetings, sales calls, regional visits, and training sessions.
  • Travel periodically to agency locations to strengthen relationships, provide training, and conduct customer visits.
  • Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, Risk Management, Agriculture, Communications, Marketing, or a related field preferred.
  • Recent graduates and individuals looking to start a career in insurance are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to evaluate information and make sound business decisions.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to providing exceptional service.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Prior insurance, underwriting, customer service, sales, or business experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to agency locations and industry events.
  • A desire to learn, grow, and build a long-term career in commercial insurance underwriting.

Why Join Great West?

At Great West Casualty Company, we believe the best underwriters are developed through hands-on experience, mentorship, and continuous learning.
