About the role
The Director of Field Services - West (DFS-West) provides leadership and direction to assigned division offices and provides oversight in the delivery of the Federal-aid Highway Program.
The DFS – West serves as a member of the FHWA Leadership Team and participates in the development of national policies and strategic plans to assure the accomplishment of the agency mission, vision, and strategic goals. The DFS – West also: Establishes intermodal and interagency partnerships to promote a collaborative process and coordination for decision making. Serves as primary contact in designing new initiatives for nationwide application that will have broad national impact upon the agency and the Nation's transportation systems. Provides direction to assigned division offices and facilitates the resolution of problems through strategic thinking, development of options, and with technology implementation bringing in Headquarters offices as appropriate. Provides leadership in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of innovative models which advance the state-of-the-art technology from a national and/or international perspective.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Complete a one-year SES probationary period (unless already completed). Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal. WRITING SAMPLE: A writing sample may be required. PRESENTATION: Applicants may be asked to prepare and present a presentation, provide a presentation on a scenario-based situation or a similar activity as a part of the applicant evaluation process.

An official transcript will be required if you are selected. A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency.
