Position Summary

The Water Quality & Treatment Lead is an introductory supervisory position. Leads assist in scheduling and supervising a team (approximately two to six staff members) responsible for performing the duties essential to one of the following disciplines: water treatment, asset management, water quality operations or laboratory services. These teams support the production and protection of high-quality potable and non-potable water that meets all regulatory requirements and Denver Water’s internal goals. Leads shall be capable of performing the essential duties assigned to their team as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This is a working supervisor position with formal but limited supervisory responsibilities over other employees in a small team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervision: Under general supervision, plans, schedules, and directs the activities of assigned personnel. Participates in supervising, supporting and ensuring the team is trained on the work. Prepares and conducts performance evaluations for direct reports, works with employees to correct deficiencies, and implement corrective actions if necessary. Participates and develops onboarding processes and hiring strategies for hiring new employees.
  • Strategic Alignment: Align individual performance expectations with organizational goals. Communicates organizational, divisional, sectional and team messaging to direct reports and provides reciprocal feedback from the staff to leadership and the organization. Champions Continuous Improvement.
  • Safety/Security: Monitors work to ensure safe and proper work practices and procedures are followed.
  • Leadership & Teamwork: Participates in Denver Water sponsored leadership meetings, various committees, projects, optimization activities and studies. Coaches staff to ensure teamwork and professional growth. Maintains a team mindset. Assist in other work as assigned to ensure service levels are met. May lead facility tours for internal and external customers.
  • Management: Participate in preliminary budget preparation, supply and equipment ordering, and vendor communications. May serve as project manager on internal stakeholder project requests.
  • QA/QC: Verify team is aligned with applicable quality control and quality assurance programs.
  • Compliance: Ensure team’s work complies with applicable federal and state regulations which may include but is not limited to the Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act, Colorado Regulations 11,65, 84, 86, 100, and International Plumbing Code, and ABPA/ASSE testing procedures/principles.
  • Field Work: May be required to perform on-call duty, emergency response, work shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as directed, and work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Administration: Record keeping duties may include Safety Data Sheets, schedules, informational logs, operational logs, program compliance, Maximo and other records as assigned. Responsible for being familiar with team specific SOPs, including leading the creation of new SOPs and periodic updates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Water Treatment Leads support the operation or maintenance of multiple treatment plants, including performing analysis of treatment plant operations, assessment of water quality as it moves through the treatment process, or troubleshooting and maintaining mechanical and chemical systems. This is a safety sensitive position that supports emergency response, sometimes involving hazardous materials and the need to wear respirators including self-contained breathing apparatuses. Other job duties specific to team assignments include:

  • Ensure team members are being trained on competencies such as plumbing, mechanical, construction, and monitoring technology so team is capable of performing preventative and predictive maintenance at treatment plants.
  • Lead and assist in the training of the team to work on internal maintenance projects including planning, ordering parts, creating job plans and completion of project.
  • Ensure team is trained on Maximo and they are completing timely and accurate updates to Maximo records. Analyze and interpret Maximo data and trends to plan out preventative and predictive maintenance activities for the team.
  • Coordinate, plan and assist specialized trades personnel in making major and/or specialized repairs to equipment. Coordinate, plan and assist contractors in coordination of plant upgrades.
  • Assist in the training of staff on reading and interpreting equipment O&Ms to assist with process troubleshooting, repairs, and plant upgrades. Lead team on equipment/process troubleshooting, repairs, and upgrades.
  • Maintain inventory of tools and equipment, purchase tools and equipment as required, store and replenish gasoline, oil, and propane for pumps and machinery.
  • Ensure team inspects, cleans, repairs, and maintains water treatment plant equipment and infrastructure.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in related field.
  • Minimum 3 Years of related work experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of certifications, education, or experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities for the position.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

Must possess the following license or license combinations at time of hire:

  • Colorado Water Treatment Class A, or Colorado Water Distribution Class 4, or ABC Plant Maintenance Technologist Class III certification.
  • Hydro-electric Certification may be required within three years of hire for leads based at facilities that operate Hydro-electric turbines.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class “R” Colorado driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
  • Requires HIPAA training.

Safety Sensitive Requirements:

  • This is a safety sensitive job where an employee’s direct action/inaction may lead to immediate harm to self, team, or the public and/or will have significant risk to the mission of Denver Water. To promote the safety, employees in this job must possess English proficiency adequate to effectively communicate with customers and coworkers, including proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

 Respiratory Protection Testing

  • This position is subject to respiratory protection testing as directed per Denver Water Physician.

An offer of employment may be contingent upon satisfactory results of a post-offer drug test and alcohol. Denver Water tests for the following: amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana (THC), opioids, and phencyclidine (PCP). A strength test may also be conducted due to the physical requirements of the position. This strength test may include lifting, pushing, and pulling various amounts of weight as well as crouching, squatting, and lifting one’s own body weight from various positions. If the position is deemed safety-sensitive or requires a CDL, you will be placed on the random drug and alcohol testing list, which means you may be tested if your name is selected while employed at Denver Water.
