About the role

As part of the Regional Maintenance Team, the Carpenter II maintains buildings and related structures applying carpentry techniques and using carpentry tools to construct, maintain and repair equipment as well as buildings and related structures. The Carpenter II must abide by safety regulations with respect to the carpentry trade by using safety devices on tools, hearing and eye protection, when necessary, while keeping the work areas safe to comply with life safety and comfort of individuals and other personnel in the work areas to ensure accident- free environments. The incumbent must perform assigned duties in a neat tradesmen-like manner by using proper materials, fasteners, tools, safety equipment and by picking up left over materials so job is completed in a timely fashion with the least amount of disruption to individuals in the homes. The Carpenter II must be able to operate motor vehicles such as light trucks, lifts and other equipment, and have the ability to lift and carry heavy objects. This position requires travel to all sites located within the Central/West Region.

Detailed Statement of Duties:

1. Maintains buildings and related structures applying carpentry techniques and using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair and/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows/window sashes, doors, roofs, gutters, locks/hinges, air conditioners, mail slots, handicapped chair rails and ramps, shelving, etc.


2. Inspects buildings and related structures needing carpentry repair or alterations, estimates job duration, cost and/or quantity of labor and materials needed to complete the job; requisition lumber and supplies; reports results of projects as needed.


3. Interprets and/or draws up sketches, patterns, instruction and/or layouts of work to be done.


4. Performs structural repair, alteration or improvement work such as lowering ceilings and paneling rooms, preparing surfaces for plaster or cement work, studding, wiring and plastering walls and cracks in floors, around windows, etc. taping joints on sheetrock and pre-cementing and/or replacing structures.


5. Performs related work such as making window and door screens; wooden structures (i.e., sheds, gazebos) drilling holes in signs; ordering materials and supplies; sharpening and tempering various tools and equipment.


6. Provide instruction, in a precise and understandable matter, and/or assistance for subordinates regarding handling of routine work, emergencies, and the feasibility of performing repairs or alterations and the scheduling of work.


7. Performs other related duties as requested.

Please Note:

This position is based in Baldwinville, MA and will be travelling throughout the Central/West Region, as required.

Schedule: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Days Off: Sunday/Saturday

With flexibility required to meet the needs of the program.

Minimum Entrance Requirements: 

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.  

Substitutions:  

I.  A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, vocational or vocational school at high school level or higher, with a major in carpentry, woodworking, or cabinetmaking may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.  

Special Requirements: Based on assignment, travel may be required. Incumbents who elect to use a motor vehicle for travel must have a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.
