About the role

At PitchBook, a Morningstar company, we are always looking forward. We continue to innovate, evolve, and invest in ourselves to bring out the best in everyone. We’re deeply collaborative and thrive on the excitement, energy, and fun that reverberates throughout the company.

Our extensive learning programs and mentorship opportunities help us create a culture of curiosity that pushes us to always find new solutions and better ways of doing things. The combination of a rapidly evolving industry and our high ambitions means there’s going to be some ambiguity along the way, but we excel when we challenge ourselves. We’re willing to take risks, fail fast, and do it all over again in the pursuit of excellence.

If you have a good attitude and are willing to roll up your sleeves to get things done, PitchBook is the place for you.

About the Role:

PitchBook Institutional Research Group is a provider of research services to private market investors, advisors and market participants. The group provides investment strategy, fund performance and industry research through a differentiated, framework-driven approach. In addition, the group provides custom research and data analytics to subscribing clients. Morningstar Indexes builds and maintains index solutions that span public and private markets, and partners with PitchBook to bring private capital data and methodology to institutional benchmarking. This role will have a dotted line to the Head of Product & Research, Indexes.

As the Senior Analyst, Private Market Indexes, you will serve as the dedicated subject matter expert and in-house voice of the Morningstar Indexes team within PitchBook’s Institutional Research Group. You will pair deep private markets knowledge with index construction and benchmarking expertise to publish differentiated research, represent the index franchise externally at industry events and with clients, and channel market feedback back into index design and product strategy. This is a highly visible, cross-functional role that sits at the intersection of research, product, and commercial teams: internally you will act as the connective tissue and advocate between Morningstar Indexes and PitchBook, and externally you will be a credible, recognizable authority on how private market performance is measured and benchmarked.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Subject matter expertise: Serve as the recognized private markets and indexing expert bridging Morningstar Indexes and the Institutional Research Group — advising on index construction, eligibility criteria, weighting, rebalancing, valuation lag, and performance measurement conventions specific to private capital
  • Published research: Author and publish analyst notes, methodology explainers, and thematic research on private market benchmarking, index-based performance measurement, and the growing role of indexes in private markets — meeting PIRG editorial standards and publication cadence. In many cases, research will be co-created with the Morningstar Index team
  • Industry engagement & speaking: Represent the index franchise externally by attending, speaking on, and moderating panels at industry conferences, client events, webinars, and in media engagements; build a visible external profile that reinforces the credibility of the index platform
  • Client engagement & voice of the customer: Engage directly with institutional clients — including allocators, asset managers, wealth platforms, consultants, and GPs — to understand benchmarking needs, use cases, and gaps; systematically capture, synthesize, and prioritize that feedback for the index and product teams
  • Cross-functional liaison: Act as the primary point of contact between the Morningstar index team and PitchBook stakeholders across Research, Product, Data Operations, Sales, Marketing, and Partnerships, ensuring alignment on roadmap, methodology changes, and go-to-market activity
  • Internal advocacy & enablement: Champion the index platform internally — educating research, sales, and client success teams on index methodology, positioning, and use cases through briefings, training materials, and enablement content
  • Index development input: Contribute private markets expertise to the design, testing, and launch of new index families and enhancements to existing ones, including input on data inputs, coverage, and methodological trade-offs
  • Competitive & market intelligence: Collaborate with the Morningstar Index Product Management team to monitor the competitive benchmarking landscape, regulatory and industry developments, and evolving client standards, and translate those findings into recommendations for the index roadmap and research agenda
  • Support the vision and values of the company through role modeling and encouraging desired behaviors
  • Participate in various company initiatives and projects as requested

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field — CFA or CAIA designation a plus
  • 5+ years’ experience in private markets research, index or benchmark research, investment research, performance measurement, or a closely related field
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship now or in the future

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in index construction, benchmark methodology, or performance and risk measurement — ideally with exposure to private asset classes
  • Strong understanding of private capital fundamentals, including fund structures, capital call and distribution dynamics, IRR, TVPI and PME, NAV and valuation practices, and emerging vehicle types such as secondaries and evergreen funds
  • Track record of publishing research for external institutional audiences, with writing samples available
  • Confident public speaker with experience presenting at industry events, on panels, or with the media
  • Client-facing experience with institutional investors and the ability to translate client needs into product and methodology requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and influence without direct authority across research, product, and commercial teams
  • Working proficiency with quantitative analysis and data tools
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex methodologies to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Critical thinker with a detail-oriented, analytical mindset and a high standard for methodological rigor
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite and the ability to quickly learn new systems and software

This role is expected to be in the office 5 days a week.
