About the role

The Reentry Support Specialist is responsible for ensuring program resident's compliance with program rules and conditions and for supervising and/or providing structured activities for program residents. This position further ensures the safe custody and accountability of all residents while maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly facility.
  1. Monitoring & Resident Interactions:
    1. Monitors resident’s movement, facility cleanliness, structured activities, and work and extra duty assignments. Ensures client compliance with VOAOHIN policies and house rules.
    2. Monitors resident’s self-administration of medications.
    3. Monitors for resident substance abuse through urine collections and alcohol testing.
    4. Conducts regular rounds and census counts as required by program’s policies and procedures. Reports any missing residents immediately.
    5. Conducts lights out and reveilles at designated times and wakes clients as requested.
    6. Conducts pat down searches of residents, wand searches of the residents, searches of resident’s property, facility searches, perimeter searches and secures confiscated property.
    7. Inventories and secures personal possessions of absconded residents.
    8. Monitors entrance to facility and monitors visitor activities.
    9. Maintains telephone coverage during hours on duty. Answers calls courteously and professionally, directs call appropriately, and takes accurate messages as necessary.
    10. Assists residents with short-term coping and problem solving. Assists residents in role playing difficult situations to achieve a more positive result.
    11. Operates agency vehicle to provide transportation services to residents when needed. The transportation of resident’s belongings or other material may be required.
    12. Assists with move-in and move-out of residents. Assists in moving furniture and/or appliances when needed.
    13. Conducts telephone verifications for job and pass checks.
    14. De-escalates potentially volatile situations between residents when necessary, utilizing cognitive-based intervention strategies.
  1. Documenting & Reporting:
    1. Completes shift summary reports, shift log entries at start and end of shift prior to transfer of shift control, and resident log entries as necessary as well as resident sign in/out sheets, resident self-medication administration log, and maintains a chronological written record of events that occur during the shift.
    2. Prepares incident/accident/injury reports as necessary and required by policies and procedures.
  1. Facility Operation:
    1. Reports inoperable equipment and submits a maintenance request.
    2. Conducts regular safety and sanitation inspections of the entire facility and ensures fire and other safety measures are carried out.
    3. Executes emergency evacuation procedures.
    4. Participates in committee meetings, staff meetings, staff trainings, and other activities contributing to the effective, efficient operations of the agency.
    5. Aid in the pickup or delivery of facility supplies as needed.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitates and maintains productive communication while maintaining a professional, pro-social relationship with residents and employees.
  • Maintains appropriate boundaries with residents as outlined in Agency Code of Ethics and other policies.
  • Effectively communicates pertinent information at shift change to co-workers and/or program management staff (i.e., hospitalizations, suicide watches, incident reports, AWOL escaped residents, unknown whereabouts).
  • Ensures residents’ rights are upheld. Maintains resident and staff confidentiality according to Agency policies and procedures; state law; and federal regulations to include Confidentiality on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Patients Records, 42 C.F.R. Part 2 and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPPA”), 45 C.F.R. Parts 160 and 164.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

  • Education, Experience & Licensure
    • The position requires a minimum of a high school diploma. Associate degree preferred. Prior experience working with clients in a residential facility is preferred.
    • CPR and first aid certification must be obtained within 60 days of position start and must be maintained.
    • A valid Driver’s License and proof of individual automobile insurance is required in addition to a driving record that is in compliance with Volunteers of America only if the employee is assigned to transport program, participants, or any other type of activity that mandates driving
  • Other Skills and Abilities
    • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must demonstrate the ability to professionally represent Volunteers of America of Ohio and Indiana, effectively interact with multi-cultural and diverse populations, and effectively, courteously, and professionally communicate and interact with residents, co-workers, and all affiliates of Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana.
    • Must be able to operate Microsoft applications, organize and prioritize work, time management, meet deadlines and operate office equipment. Position requires work schedule flexibility to include evening hours and weekend hours. Travel may be required.
