Position Summary
The Dishwasher / Utility Associate plays an essential role in supporting the daily operation of the culinary and dining teams by maintaining clean, sanitary, safe, and organized kitchen and food service areas. This position is responsible for dishwashing, cleaning and sanitizing equipment and work areas, properly storing supplies, removing trash, and assisting with general kitchen and dining support as needed.
The ideal candidate is dependable, hardworking, organized, and takes pride in maintaining a clean and efficient environment while working collaboratively with the culinary and dining teams to provide an exceptional experience for residents and guests.
Essential Job Duties
- Maintain community standards for cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and organization throughout kitchen and food service areas.
- Set up, operate, clean, and break down commercial dishwashing and ware-washing equipment.
- Wash and sanitize dishes, glassware, utensils, pots, pans, trays, and other kitchen equipment.
- Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, work surfaces, floors, storage areas, and other assigned food service areas.
- Properly store clean dishes, cookware, utensils, food supplies, and non-food supplies in designated areas.
- Assist with general kitchen cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, removing trash, and maintaining clean and organized work areas.
- Empty trash and recycling containers as needed and dispose of materials according to established procedures.
- Assist dining team members with setting and clearing tables and maintaining service stations as needed.
- Assist with basic food preparation and production tasks as assigned.
- Follow proper food handling, sanitation, infection prevention, and safety procedures at all times.
- Follow established procedures for the safe use, storage, and handling of cleaning and sanitation products.
- Assist with receiving, organizing, and storing food and kitchen supplies as needed.
- Communicate equipment concerns, supply needs, or safety issues to culinary leadership promptly.
- Work collaboratively with cooks, servers, and other Culinary Services team members to support efficient meal service.
- Participate in required meetings, training, and educational sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support Culinary Services and the overall operation of the community.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Previous dishwasher, utility, kitchen, restaurant, senior living, or food service experience preferred; six (6) months of related experience is a plus.
- Ability to safely set up and operate commercial dishwashing and ware-washing equipment.
- Basic knowledge of kitchen sanitation, food safety, and proper cleaning procedures preferred.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
- Dependable, organized, and attentive to cleanliness and detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively with culinary and dining team members.
- Knowledge of applicable food safety, Health Department, OSHA, and workplace safety standards preferred.
- Must maintain a flexible schedule based on community needs, including availability to work weekends and holidays as required.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, approximately 3–8 hours throughout the workday.
- Ability to frequently bend, reach, stoop, twist, push, and pull while performing kitchen and cleaning duties.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to push and pull bus carts, tray carts, and other equipment weighing up to 100 pounds, using assistance when appropriate.
- Ability to safely perform sweeping, mopping, dishwashing, and other repetitive cleaning tasks.
- Ability to frequently handle dishes, cookware, utensils, food, kitchen supplies, and cleaning equipment.
- Ability to safely operate commercial dishwashing and ware-washing equipment.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures, including exposure to heat from kitchen equipment and cooler temperatures from refrigerators and freezers.
- May regularly be exposed to hot water, steam, wet surfaces, industrial cleaning and sanitation products, and other conditions commonly associated with a commercial kitchen.
- Must follow established food safety, sanitation, personal protective equipment, and workplace safety procedures.
