About the role

Overview

Join LoopTech, Cook Medical’s applied AI team, to help turn promising artificial intelligence concepts into working products. LoopTech is a small, high-autonomy group inside Cook Medical that designs, prototypes, and ships AI applications across the company — from conversational platforms and internal tools to medical imaging pipelines. As a LoopTech intern, you will write real code from week one, using modern agentic development tools to move from concept to shipped demo quickly, and you will see your work used by real people inside the organization.

This position is a 12-week paid internship located in Bloomington, Spencer, or Ellettsville Indiana. It is offered for a period extending from mid-May through mid-August (exact dates depend on school calendars.) This position includes 401(k) options, an assigned mentor, capstone presentation, and intern events. If working onsite, you will also have access to a fitness center, an onsite cafeteria option, and a one-time housing stipend. All internships provide hands-on experience with meaningful projects in the Medical Device Manufacturing Industry.

Responsibilities

The primary objective of the LoopTech Intern is to gain practical experience by contributing to LoopTech’s active product portfolio: designing and shipping full-stack features, supporting data science and model evaluation work, documenting and demoing work clearly, collaborating effectively with engineers and researchers, contributing to responsible AI practices, building a professional network, and working toward a capstone project presented at the end of the internship.

  • Design, build, and ship full-stack features on active LoopTech products, typically with Python (FastAPI) backends and TypeScript/React frontends.
  • Use agentic development tools (e.g., Claude Code and similar AI coding assistants) and strong prompt engineering to accelerate development and reduce boilerplate.
  • Conduct data collection, preparation, and curation in support of model training, evaluation, and analytics.
  • Assist in building and running evaluation harnesses for AI models and agents, including error analysis and reporting of results.
  • Lead and participate in rapid prototyping sessions to develop proof-of-concepts that could actually be used by the company.
  • Package work as minimal, runnable demos that others can execute, and present working software at team demos and the capstone presentation.
  • Document your approach and share your work with the organization.
  • Participate in team discussions, brainstorming sessions, knowledge sharing, user experiments, and pilot projects.

Qualifications

  • Strong programming skills in Python and/or TypeScript/JavaScript, with working git fluency.
  • Familiarity with web application fundamentals: APIs, databases, and modern frontend frameworks.
  • Interest in large language models and applied AI; experience with AI coding assistants or agentic tools is a plus.
  • Familiarity with machine learning concepts, data preprocessing, or frameworks such as PyTorch is a strong plus but not required.
  • Motivated self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work with high autonomy as well as in a team.
  • Eagerness to learn, adapt, and take on new challenges in the AI field.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • All candidates should have an interest in a career in the Life Sciences field, a willingness to take initiative, and an ability to work well with others
  • Candidates should be students entering their Junior or Senior year the following fall semester or entering graduate school; candidates who graduate the spring semester before this internship are also eligible
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 is preferred
  • All candidates must provide proof of enrollment (including pre-registration certification for the following fall) for consideration
  • Multiple disciplines will be considered (e.g. Computer Science, Data Science, Informatics, Software Engineering, Computer/Electrical Engineering, and related fields)
