About this Role

The Project Engineer (Transmission) is an entry-level project support position responsible for assisting Project Managers and field leadership with the planning, coordination, documentation, and execution of high-voltage transmission construction projects throughout Irby’s West Region operating area. This role is designed for recent graduates or early-career professionals seeking to build a long-term career in utility construction project management. The Project Engineer will gain hands-on exposure to field operations while supporting project schedules, costs, materials, RFIs, submittals, change management, reporting, safety, quality, and closeout activities. Prior utility construction experience is not required; a strong willingness to learn, travel, and work closely with both office and field teams is essential.

What You'll Do

  • Assist Project Managers, Superintendents, General Foremen, and other project team members with day-to-day coordination of transmission construction projects.
  • Support pre-construction activities including review of drawings, specifications, bid documents, contracts, schedules, and project scope.
  • Assist with preparing and maintaining project schedules, look-ahead plans, progress updates, and milestone tracking.
  • Prepare, track, and maintain RFIs, submittals, change requests, meeting minutes, action-item logs, and other project documentation.
  • Support project cost tracking, budget updates, forecasting, purchase documentation, and reconciliation of project expenses under the direction of the Project Manager.
  • Assist with material and equipment tracking, including delivery status, shortages, inventory, and coordination with procurement, vendors, and field personnel.
  • Coordinate with engineering, operations, subcontractors, suppliers, clients, and internal support teams to help resolve project questions and keep work progressing.
  • Participate in pre-construction, customer, progress, safety, and closeout meetings; prepare meeting notes and follow up on assigned action items.
  • Conduct routine project site visits to understand field conditions, monitor progress, verify documentation, and support communication between field and office teams.
  • Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly reporting related to safety, quality, production, schedule, cost, and overall project status.
  • Support documentation of field changes, redlines, as-builts, quantities, production information, and completed work for project records and billing support.
  • Help identify project risks, constraints, schedule impacts, material issues, or field conflicts and communicate concerns to project leadership for resolution.
  • Support project closeout activities including punch lists, final documentation, material reconciliation, lessons learned, and turnover requirements.
  • Promote Irby Construction safety expectations and comply with all company, client, and regulatory safety requirements while working in office and field environments.
  • Perform other project coordination, administrative, and field-support duties as assigned to support successful project delivery.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Construction Science, Engineering, or a related field required or expected at time of hire.
  • This is an entry-level opportunity; prior utility construction experience is not required.
  • Strong interest in electric utility construction, transmission projects, and project management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint; exposure to scheduling or project management software is a plus.
  • Ability to read and develop familiarity with construction drawings, specifications, schedules, contracts, and technical project documentation.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with office and field personnel.
  • Self-motivated, dependable, coachable, and willing to learn in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required.

Working Conditions

  • Position supports transmission projects throughout Irby’s West Region operating area. This is a full-time, on-site position at the assigned project location. The project office, if applicable, will be located at the construction site. Remote work is not available.
  • Work will include a combination of office and field environments with exposure to outdoor conditions, uneven terrain, heavy equipment, and active utility construction operations.
  • Standard business hours are expected; extended hours, early starts, weekends, or schedule flexibility may be required based on project needs.
  • Must be willing to relocate to and reside near the assigned project location for the duration of the project. The Project Engineer is expected on site every day the crew works, whether that is 4, 5, 6, or 7 days per week. Must safely navigate active construction sites while complying with required PPE and safety procedures.
