Software Engineering CO-OP (Fall 2026)

Kearfott Corporation is seeking a Software Engineering Co-Op to join our team in Pine Brook, NJ. The selected candidate will support Kearfott’s Software Engineering organization, working closely with experienced software, systems, and test engineers in a hands-on environment focused on embedded software development, hardware integration, and product verification.

The Co-Op will gain practical experience developing and testing software for embedded systems used in aerospace and defense applications. Responsibilities may include:

  • Support the development, integration, and verification of embedded software and firmware.

  • Assist with software-hardware integration, including the evaluation of interfaces between embedded software, electronic hardware, sensors, and test equipment.

  • Develop, revise, and execute software test instructions, test procedures, and verification plans.

  • Support the coordination of system assembly, integration, and testing activities.

  • Analyze test and measurement data and document results in software and engineering databases.

  • Develop scripts, tools, and automated test capabilities to improve software verification and engineering workflows.

  • Troubleshoot software and system issues using test data, logs, debugging techniques, and engineering analysis.

  • Work with engineering teams to interpret test results, identify problems, and recommend corrective actions.

  • Review technical data and assess software and system performance against requirements.

  • Develop graphs and other visualizations to communicate analysis results.

  • Prepare technical reports and briefings describing the results and significance of analyses performed.

  • Contribute to process improvements, software tools, documentation, and test methods.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Fundamental understanding of software development and programming concepts.

  • Interest in embedded systems, firmware, real-time software, or software-hardware integration.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, requirements, schematics, and test data.

  • Strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

  • Minimum GPA of 3.2.

Preferred Skills

  • Coursework or project experience in C or C++.

  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW.

  • Familiarity with microcontrollers, embedded processors, real-time operating systems, or embedded Linux.

  • Exposure to software debugging, version control, automated testing, or continuous integration.

  • Experience developing scripts for data analysis, test automation, or engineering tools.

  • General knowledge of mathematical modeling and analysis methods.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related engineering or scientific discipline.

  • Coursework, projects, or demonstrated interest in embedded software, firmware, computer engineering, digital design, systems analysis, systems integration, guidance and control, or related technical areas.

  • Academic or practical experience that provides a foundation for developing expertise in embedded software development and verification.

  • Ability to work full-time, 40 hours per week, during the 2026 Fall Semester.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

The salary range is $20.00 - $30.00/hour. The final compensation amount will be determined based on factors such as experience level, skill set, school year, major, etc.
