About the role
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Audubon is currently seeking a Director of E&I Construction to join our team in our Houston Energy Corridor Office. The Director of E&I Construction reports directly to the Vice President, Construction and is responsible for building, leading, and continuously improving Audubon’s E&I construction program. The Director will develop a team of E&I specialists who support project teams and manage E&I scopes delivered by qualified subcontractors across the Company’s projects. Because E&I work is currently subcontracted, a central responsibility is to establish and administer a consistent process for evaluating, qualifying, selecting, and monitoring E&I subcontractors, while ensuring their work meets project requirements for safety, quality, cost, schedule, and turnover. The Director will set program standards and provide hands-on functional leadership from estimating and planning through field execution, commissioning, and closeout. The role will also assess and develop the people, procedures, systems, equipment, and controls that would be needed if the Company elects to establish in-house E&I construction capabilities in the future.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Build, lead, and manage the Company’s E&I construction program, including its organization, governance, standard processes, procedures, tools, performance measures, and accountability expectations. Report program status, needs, risks, and results directly to the Vice President, Construction.
- Develop and lead a team of E&I specialists who provide consistent functional support to project managers and project teams, oversee subcontracted E&I execution, and help resolve technical, commercial, schedule, quality, and field issues.
- Establish and administer a documented E&I subcontractor qualification and approval process. Evaluate firms for relevant project experience, technical capability, workforce and supervision, safety and quality performance, financial and operational capacity, certifications, references, insurance, and required compliance. Maintain and periodically review an approved E&I subcontractor roster.
- Lead E&I subcontracting strategy and procurement support, including scope development, bid packages, requests for quotation, technical and commercial evaluations, bid leveling, risk identification, and award recommendations. Confirm subcontract scopes, interfaces, exclusions, deliverables, schedule obligations, and closeout requirements are clearly defined.
- Serve as the E&I functional leader across assigned projects. Review contract requirements, estimates, execution plans, budgets, schedules, staffing plans, design basis, procurement needs, and project risks; identify gaps early and help project teams establish an executable E&I plan.
- Monitor E&I subcontractor performance through project reviews, field engagement, schedule and cost reporting, quality records, safety performance, progress measurement, and deliverable tracking. Require timely recovery plans and corrective actions when performance falls short and elevate material issues to project leadership.
- Coordinate E&I engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, quality, HSE, project controls, and operations interfaces. Support design and constructability reviews, equipment and material selection, RFIs, submittals, field changes, installation sequencing, and resolution of discipline and work-area conflicts.
- Establish and maintain E&I expectations for safety, quality assurance and quality control, inspection and test plans, code and regulatory compliance, material traceability, testing, documentation, commissioning, punch-list completion, turnover packages, as-builts, training, warranties, and final acceptance.
- Review E&I estimates, budgets, forecasts, commitments, payment applications, change requests, claims, and cost-to-complete projections. Support change management and commercial recommendations in coordination with project leadership and within Company approval limits.
- Develop standard E&I execution practices and lessons learned across projects. Track program performance and use project results, subcontractor feedback, and field experience to improve estimating, procurement, execution, safety, quality, productivity, and closeout.
- Assess the potential future business case and implementation requirements for self-performing selected E&I work. If authorized by Company leadership, develop a phased readiness plan covering service scope, workforce and supervision, recruiting and training, tools and equipment, procedures, estimating and productivity standards, safety and quality controls, and financial performance measures.
- Build strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders; communicate E&I execution status and recommendations clearly; and represent the Company in project and program reviews.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Responsibilities:
- All employees are responsible for supporting Audubon Companies’ Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures. This includes:
- Performing duties in a manner that protects personal and team health and safety
- Participating in required HSE training, meetings, and reporting activities
- Identifying and reporting hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions
- Following safe work practices and complying with applicable regulatory requirements
EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- At least 10 years of experience in E&I construction, project execution, or a closely related industrial EPC environment, including at least five years in a leadership role with responsibility for teams, subcontractors, or multi-project delivery.
- Experience building teams, setting performance expectations, coaching project or functional leaders, and establishing consistent processes across multiple projects.
- Ability to review estimates, schedules, cost forecasts, change requests, risk registers, quality records, safety performance, and subcontractor progress reports and use them to drive timely decisions.
- Knowledge of applicable electrical and instrumentation codes, standards, and regulatory requirements, with the ability to identify when specialist engineering or code interpretation is required.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant industry experience may be considered in place of a degree.
- Strong communication, negotiation, organization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, including the ability to work effectively with executives, project teams, clients, and subcontractors.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and common project management, scheduling, estimating, cost-control, document-control, and collaboration systems. Ability to travel to project sites as business needs require.
