About the role

JOB SUMMARY:

Under moderate direction of the pathologists and laboratory director and supervision of the pathology facilitator, this entry level position performs technical processing and related clerical functions to prepare specimens for evaluation by pathologists and cytotechnologist.  Exhibits the values of F.I.R.S.T. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs technical processing of surgical, GYN, and Non-Gyn specimens for subsequent evaluation by pathologist and cytotechnologist.
  2. Maintains departmental files and logs and performs clerical functions related to the processing of specimens to ensure required information is documented and specimen information is easily retrieved.
  3. Works with team to implement new test methodologies, maintain accreditation standards through procedure revisions, and proficiency testing; evaluation of processes to enhance efficiency and maintain low costs through supply ordering and selection. 
  4. Performance of special stain techniques.
  5. Recycles xylene and alcohol.
  6. Orders and maintains supplies.
  7. Disposes of tissue.
  8. Gathers statistical data (daily, weekly, monthly).
  9. Prepares information for additions/changes to procedure manuals.
  10. Files, stores, and disposes of slides/tissue blocks.
  11. Cleans and maintains the frozen section room and morgue.
  12. Contributes to the effective, efficient operations of the department.
  13. Considers the age of the patient served, applies knowledge of growth and development and age-specific techniques through the life span (neonates/infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics) in planning and implementing care.
  14. Demonstrates commitment to professional accountability and growth to maintain and expand knowledge and skills.

  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS, HAZARDS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Works standard work week with overtime as necessary.  Staffing may require alteration to regularly scheduled shift.  Works in a well lit laboratory area with adequate ventilation.  Works with formalin, xylene, and other chemicals and reagents that are toxic, caustic, or flammable.  Physical exertion is light to moderate with movement of supplies and large reagent containers required.  The task of this job involves exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissues.  Must be able to move or position 25 lb. 

CONTACTS WITH OTHERS:

Frequent direct contact with cytotechnologist, pathologists and pathology administrative assistants.  Contact with nursing personnel, physician office personnel, physicians and all departmental clients.  Contact with other departmental personnel.  Limited patient contact relative to surgical procedures.  

EQUIPMENT USED/SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED:

Requires skilled use of microtome and use of tissue embedding equipment.  Good manual dexterity necessary to manipulate thin tissue sections and to embed minute tissue specimens.  Color discrimination required to verify quality of staining reactions.

1 – 3 years of experience in laboratory or pathology environment required. Some previous training in histology techniques and procedures is preferred.
