About the role

This National Guard position is for a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC, Position Description Number D1194000, within the ((ALL) FMS-CSMS-UTES SHOPS)) of the New Jersey National Guard. This vacancy announcement is a Title 32, Excepted Service position.. The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, inspection, and/or overhaul of a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment.

As a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC, WG-5801-10, you will: Troubleshoot, perform maintenance, and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment Troubleshoot equipment and diagnose the cause of mechanical failures Troubleshoots equipment and diagnoses the cause of mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks and/or uses test equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges, and computer diagnostic tools Independently performs repairs and maintenance functions in remote locations that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts of components and systems such as injectors, leaking wheel cylinders, corroded mufflers, fuel tanks, brake cylinders and worn brake shoes, voltage regulators, generators, injector pumps, and fuel pumps. Remove and disassemble engines Independently perform repairs and maintenance functions in remote locations Conduct readiness and inspections on vehicles Assists in the maintenance of production reports and records, and makes recommendations to the supervisor. Performs other duties as assigned

Areas of Consideration: All New Jersey National Guard members (M-Day, Traditional, and Drill-Status Guardsmen) Individuals eligible for membership in the New Jersey ARMY National Guard Military Grades: E-2 to E-6 Title 32 Dual-Status Positions: Compatible Military Assignments Appointments may require the selected candidate to be assigned to a *military unit* compatible with the full-time Military Technician (Dual Status) position. *Military Unit* -- The unit by which the individual is employed as a Military Technician (Dual Status) employee; or a unit that the individual is employed as a Military Technician (Dual Status) employee to support. (Guidance established by NJ HRO-J1) Additional Requirements Participation in direct deposit is mandatory Appointment is contingent upon Federal suitability review and background investigation May be required to successfully complete a probationary period For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license
