About the role
The Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN) performs assigned duties in a matter that promotes quality health care, positive customer service and the maintenance of an environment committed to serving the veteran. The LVN is a direct-care provider who has the technical proficiency and excellent observation skills necessary for initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties in delivering comprehensive practical nursing care to variable patient populations.

Has knowledge and ability to appropriately carry-out assigned patient care based on patients' conditions. Demonstrates competency in dealing with a high volume of patients with chronic disease (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, and cardiac and pulmonary disease), as well as acute episodes of illness. Completed work requires a general review by Registered Nurse for appropriateness and conformity with established policies and procedures. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Direct Patient Care: On an ongoing basis, provides quality care to patients with multi-system problems, including seriously- and chronically-ill patients Has knowledge and skill in performing support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures Consistently distinguishes, evaluates, and reports subtle changes in patient status, and initiates appropriate action Demonstrates sound judgment in selecting the most appropriate application of procedures and guidelines and ability to plan patient care and set priorities Observes, identifies, and responds to patients' needs for care, including medication and equipment-assisted care, and recognizes deviations from normal Observes, identifies, and responds to patient/family education needs, and teaches in accordance with current clinical practice standards Observes, identifies, and responds to patient/family education needs, and teaches in accordance with current clinical practice standards Has knowledge and understanding of human behavior, patient motivations and reactions to situations, and ability to appropriately utilize this knowledge in working effectively with patients, family members, and other staff Indirect Patient Care: Accurately recognizes, reports, and records relevant patient information Actively seeks educational opportunities to enhance nursing knowledge and skills Adheres to principles of infection control Assists in promoting safe work habits and is a role model for other staff in fostering safety principles and practices Serves as preceptor in orienting, teaching, and training less experienced LVNs and NAs/HTs Contributes to smooth operation of clinic by consistently ensuring that support and administrative tasks are carried out Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm or 7:30am-4:00pm Recruitment/Relocation Incentives (Sign-on Bonus): Not Authorized Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance): Not Authorized Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
