About the role

The Locksmith performs installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and modification of mechanical, combination, and electronic locking devices and security hardware. The position also opens locks and vaults, establishes master key systems, fabricates and repairs lock components, diagnoses mechanical and electrical malfunctions, and determines the repairs or fabrications necessary to maintain locking and security systems.

Major duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Repairs, replaces and changes combination locks on vaults. Repairs, overhauls, replaces, and installs all types of key locks in or on building structures, including key-in-knob, rim, mortise, switches, mail boxes, cams, padlocks, magnetic stripe locks, and keypad electronic locks. Sets up master systems, determining by mathematical computation the number of different keys to pass each lock and the number of keys and cuts to be made. Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains electronic keying devices, including systems with floating key pads for computer card readers. Removes locks from doors, disassembles cylinders, changes combinations, reassembles, and reinstalls locking devices. Opens all types of keyed locks when keys are lost or unavailable by making keys by impressing, picking, or other locksmithing techniques. Cuts keys from code machines and duplicates keys for all kinds of locks. Installs, troubleshoots, services, and/or repairs locking devices and determines whether problems are mechanical or electrical. Prepares sketches, drawings, and part models in order to fabricate replacement parts to fine tolerances and replaces or fabricates broken or worn parts. Repairs, adjusts, overhauls, removes, and replaces door closers of various types, including hydraulic and air-pressure closers; replaces parts and installs new closers. Perform duties as assigned.
