Overview

HireRight is seeking a Senior Tax Accountant to join our Corporate Tax team. Reporting to the Vice President of Global Tax, this role will be responsible for supporting U.S. and Canadian indirect tax compliance, state income and franchise tax reporting, federal tax compliance, tax provision support, and various international tax initiatives.

The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in corporate taxation, enjoys solving complex tax issues, and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. This position offers exposure to a broad range of domestic and international tax matters while partnering closely with Accounting, Finance, Treasury, Legal, and external advisors.

Responsibilities

Tax Compliance

  • Prepare and review U.S. and Canadian sales and use tax returns in partnership with external service providers.
  • Prepare state income and franchise tax workpapers and assist with state tax compliance and filings.
  • Support federal income tax compliance and quarterly and annual tax provision processes.
  • Prepare property tax, gross receipts tax, withholding tax, and other indirect tax filings as assigned.
  • Ensure timely and accurate tax filings while maintaining compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and international tax requirements.

Tax Research & Planning

  • Research and interpret federal, state, local, and international tax laws and regulations and evaluate their impact on the business.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and communicate potential business impacts.
  • Assist with transfer pricing documentation and annual updates.
  • Support tax planning initiatives and identify opportunities to improve tax efficiency while managing compliance risk.

Audits & Tax Controversy

  • Prepare documentation and support tax audits conducted by federal, state, provincial, and local taxing authorities.
  • Respond to tax notices and information requests.
  • Partner with external advisors to resolve audit matters and maintain supporting documentation.

Tax Technology & Process Improvement

  • Support the ongoing administration and maintenance of Vertex tax software.
  • Assist with tax technology initiatives, including ERP integrations, process automation, and system enhancements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve tax processes, strengthen internal controls, and increase operational efficiency.
  • Maintain tax documentation and workpapers to support compliance and financial reporting.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Partner with Accounting, Finance, Treasury, Legal, FP&A, and Revenue teams to resolve tax-related questions and ensure accurate tax treatment.
  • Provide guidance on sales and use tax, withholding tax, and indirect tax matters impacting business operations.
  • Support mergers, acquisitions, legal entity changes, and other strategic initiatives from a tax perspective.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior accounting or tax team members as appropriate.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • 3–6+ years of corporate tax or public accounting experience, with exposure to multistate tax compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of state and local tax (SALT), including sales and use tax.
  • Experience preparing tax workpapers and supporting tax compliance processes.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA license or active progress toward CPA certification.
  • Master's degree in Taxation (MST) or related graduate degree.
  • Experience with Vertex, OneSource, or similar tax software.
  • Experience supporting multinational organizations or international tax matters.
  • Public accounting experience with a Big Four or national/regional accounting firm.
