The Middle and Large Underwriter owns the end-to-end profitable portfolio outcomes and drives broker engagement through disciplined underwriting judgment. Leverages AI-enabled insights and deep technical expertise to shape deals, accelerate analysis, and focus human expertise on pricing, risk trade-offs, and strategic relationship decisions. This is accomplished through the following:
- Drive profitable growth through proactive sales leadership, with clear external orientation and market engagement, owning the commercial agenda with brokers and agents by identifying opportunities, shaping demand, negotiating deal structures, and converting pipeline into quality bound business.
- Lead strategic broker and agency relationships (with meaningful field presence), moving beyond transactional interactions to influence placement decisions, co‑create solutions, and position HIG as a preferred market across new business and renewals.
- Protect and improve portfolio profitability and long-term performance through strategic ownership and active portfolio steering, taking a forward-looking view of mix, retention and growth to drive sustained outcomes – not just individual deal decisions.
- Deliver sustainable, risk-adjusted growth through tailored account solutions, serving as a trusted underwriting advisor to structure, price, and negotiate risks with disciplined judgment and appropriate oversight.
- Improve growth, retention, and portfolio quality through data-driven insight by analyzing agency and portfolio performance, identifying trends, uncovering opportunities, and proactively adjusting underwriting and growth priorities.
- Execute territory and agency sales strategies, translating market insights, performance data, and growth priorities into targeted action plans that drive pipeline health, new business flow, and cross‑sell opportunities.
- Apply underwriting governance with confidence and credibility—maintaining strong command of guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal controls while exercising sound judgment in complex situations.
- Enhance enterprise value by acting as a connector and orchestrator across various functional areas (Risk Engineering, Claims, Sales, Operations), proactively shaping outcomes, strengthening long-term relationships, and reinforcing disciplined underwriting decisions to deliver holistic end-to-end account solutions.
- Communication: Delivers concise and professional communication, breaking down account details and summarizing risks.
- Insight-Driven Underwriting: Effectively integrates feedback, direction, and market insights into practical underwriting actions.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of P&C Commercial Carrier or Agency/Broker experience required; underwriting or broker facing experience preferred. Candidates from adjacent P&C roles including Account Managers, Agents/Brokers, Business Development, Claims, Producers, Risk Engineering, Sales or Underwriting support may be considered. Position level to be determined upon careful review of selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.

- AI Integrated Judgement & Digital Fluency: Ability to adopt new technologies and leverage AI and digital tools effectively; integrates AI into Underwriting judgement – knows when to lean in, challenge, and apply the tools to sharpen speed and quality of decisions.
- Verbal and Written Communication: Ability to communicate with clarity and executive presence.
- Portfolio Management, Portfolio Strategy, and Account Solutioning: Portfolio ownership mindset, managing tradeoffs across growth, profitability and enterprise priorities.
- Technical Underwriting Expertise: Ability to evaluate risk and apply disciplined pricing judgment.
- Product and Market Acumen: Ability to apply deep business and product knowledge to structure effective coverage solutions.
- Planning & Organization: Effectively manages desk responsibilities, prioritizing effectively and delivering consistent results
- Enterprise Thinking: Ability to make decisions that optimize enterprise outcomes beyond individual accounts or portfolios.
- Valid driver’s license (company pool car may be provided).
This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Brea, CA; Los Angeles, CA; Scottsdale, AZ) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$68,000 - $123,600The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
