Instructor (Chemistry Laboratory) - EXCEPTED SERVICE
About the role
This position is at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Maritime Administration (MARAD) serves as Chemistry Laboratory Manager in the Department of Mathematics and Science.
As a Instructor (Chemistry Laboratory), you will: Present relevant chemistry concepts in the pre-lab lecture, checking of students' execution of experiments, preliminary evaluation of students' experimental data and grading lab reports submitted by students. Serve as the Property Custodian for the Department and is required to keep an up-to-date inventory of equipment, supplies, spare parts, and maintenance needs for chemistry and physics. Be responsible for the reliability, the precise calibration, and the technical operations of all equipment used in the physics and chemistry laboratories and in demonstrations that require periodic testing and calibration. The ideal candidate for this position is a hands-on technical professional who combines expertise in laboratory operations with strong instructional skills to support the Department of Mathematics and Science at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service. TRIAL PERIOD: This is an Excepted Service position. This job will be filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive service. Applicants selected for an excepted service position may be subject to a two-year trial period. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 2-year trial period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest. Individual Occupational Requirements Basic Requirements: Degree: Physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
