S&B Staff Writer

The S&B is Grinnell College’s independent, student-run newspaper, founded in 1894. We are an award-winning publication with a monthly readership of more than 75,000 students, alumni, faculty, staff, citizens of Grinnell and many others. In spring 2026, The S&B won the Iowa College Media Association Best Newspaper of the Year award for its 2025-2026 coverage. Staff writers:

• Work with editors to pitch story ideas and produce journalistic content every week

• The process of writing a weekly story typically includes conducting several interviews, developing knowledge of the story topic, redrafting the story based on editor edits and clarifying missing or inaccurate information

• Collaborate with editors, writers, visuals/audio/video team on at least one long-form investigative project on a beat of interest (i. social justice, ii. environment and climate, iii. health, iv. legislation and politics, v. lifestyle) per semester

We are looking to hire a student with strong writing, researching and interviewing skills. Staff writers must also be able to receive and incorporate feedback, meet deadlines and apply a critical and creative lens to current events. They must also be able to arrange travel (The S&B can assist) to cover stories outside of Grinnell’s campus.

Staff writers are expected to work approximately 9 hours a week.

Preferred Qualifications: Possesses excellent time management, strong writing and communication skills, ability to work collaboratively with others, and uses independent judgement to create a final product.
