As our Carpentry and Joinery Workshop Technician, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance and organisation of the Carpentry and Joinery workshops at our Southgate campus. You will prepare workshops for practical sessions, provide hands-on technical support to lecturers and learners, deliver demonstrations modelling correct techniques and safe working practices, and keep tools, machinery and materials in excellent working order.
This is a rare opportunity to join our Construction and Building Services team at an exciting moment, as we develop a new construction centre at Southgate alongside a well-established Electrical Installation faculty. What You'll Be Doing
* Workshop preparation: Prepare, set up and maintain Carpentry and Joinery workshops for practical teaching sessions, ensuring all tools, machinery, timber, sheet materials, fixings and consumables are ready, safe and fit for purpose.
* Technical support and demonstrations: Provide hands-on technical support to lecturers during practical lessons and assessments, and deliver demonstrations to learners modelling correct techniques and safe use of hand tools, portable power tools and fixed woodworking machinery.
* Equipment and maintenance: Maintain, service and carry out basic repairs on tools and machinery including saws, planers and extraction systems, arranging specialist servicing where required and keeping accurate maintenance records.
* Health and safety: Maintain high standards of health and safety in the workshops at all times, carry out routine safety checks on machinery, tools and extraction systems, support risk assessments and COSHH documentation, and challenge unsafe behaviour when necessary.
* Stock and workshop management: Manage stock control, ordering and safe storage of timber, materials and consumables within budget, keep workshops clean and organised to industry standards, and assist with workshop layout and the continuous improvement of facilities.
* Learner support: Support learners during practical activities, assist with inductions covering workshop rules, PPE requirements and machinery operation, and work collaboratively with teaching staff to support learner progress and achievement.
* Audits and inspections: Support audits, awarding body visits and external verification as required, maintaining accurate safety and maintenance records throughout.
What You'll Bring
Essential
* A Level 2 or Level 3 Carpentry and Joinery qualification, or equivalent
* English and Maths at Level 2 or above
* Practical experience within the carpentry and joinery trade or a workshop environment
* Experience maintaining tools, woodworking machinery or workshop facilities
* Sound knowledge of carpentry and joinery tools, machinery and materials
* Strong awareness of health and safety in woodworking environments
* Ability to organise and manage a practical woodworking workshop effectively
* Ability to follow procedures and maintain accurate safety and maintenance records
* Effective communication skills with a calm, reliable and approachable manner with staff and learners
* Basic IT skills including email, inventory systems and digital record keeping
* Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and safeguarding

* A Health and Safety qualification or machinery-related safety training
* A First Aid qualification
* Experience supporting a teaching or training environment
* Experience of stock control and timber or material ordering
