Job Description
Senior Lawyer – Vice President at Barclays, responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance and managing legal and regulatory risks within the bank.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement best practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
- Provide legal advice and support on regulatory affairs, including compliance, risk management, and transactional matters.
- Represent the Legal department in regulatory proceedings (litigation, arbitration, investigations).
- Review legislation, regulations, and legal documents to ensure compliance.
- Conduct legal research and analysis to stay updated on changes that may impact the bank.
- Develop and deliver training programmes to educate employees on legal and regulatory requirements.
- Identify, communicate and provide proactive legal advice on applicable laws, rules and regulations (LRRs).
- Ensure LRRs are allocated and reflected within relevant policies, standards, and controls.
- Plan resources, budgets and policies; manage and maintain policies/processes; deliver continuous improvements.
- Define jobs, responsibilities and plan for the department’s future needs and operations; counsel employees on performance.
- Lead specialist teams to influence operations, balancing short and long‑term goals.
- Demonstrate leadership behaviours: Listen, Energise, Align, Develop (LEAD).
- If an individual contributor, act as a subject‑matter expert guiding technical direction and collaborating on multi‑year assignments.
- Advise stakeholders, including functional leadership and senior management, on functional and cross‑functional areas of impact.
- Manage and mitigate risks through assessment in support of the control and governance agenda.
- Collaborate with other areas to stay aligned with business activity and strategies.
- Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought and research.
- Build and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, using influencing and negotiating skills.
- Demonstrate Barclays values and mindset in all interactions.
Qualifications
- Senior qualified lawyer (Solicitor, Barrister or equivalent) with relevant post‑qualification experience (in‑house and/or private practice) in financial services, regulation and commercial contracts.
- Technical knowledge of English law contracts or equivalent legal frameworks.
- Excellent attention to detail, organisational and time‑management skills; ability to manage a range of tasks and deliver to deadlines.
- Experience supporting, supervising, and developing other colleagues.
- Experience in the financial services industry, in‑house or with a significant law firm, focused on regulatory advice.
- Understanding of DLT/blockchain systems.
- Knowledge of Barclays’ operational and strategic objectives.
- Demonstrated experience identifying improvements in processes and ways of working and supporting implementation.
- Key critical skills: risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen, strategic thinking, digital and technology, and job‑specific technical skills.
Location
The role can be based in Birmingham, London, Manchester or Glasgow.
