Business Development Manager

ABOUT YOU
The position requires a confident, commercially focused and highly responsive individual who enjoys building relationships and turning opportunities into results. You will be proactive by telephone and face to face, able to communicate clearly and concisely, and comfortable engaging with busy technical and senior stakeholders.
You will bring proven sales or account management experience, ideally within contract laboratory testing or a related scientific or technical service. A technical laboratory background with a strong desire to move into sales may also be considered.
Required skills and experience:
Proven experience in business development, sales or account management
Experience developing sales pipelines and securing new business opportunities
Ability to grow existing accounts through gap analysis, cross-selling and excellent customer care
Strong commercial awareness with confident negotiation and influencing skills
A proactive approach to telephone contact, customer meetings and relationship development
Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
Ability to understand customer needs and present appropriate technical or service-led solutions
Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and respond quickly
Experience maintaining accurate customer and sales activity within a CRM system
Self-motivated, results-driven and comfortable working remotely with regular UK travel
Desirable:
Experience selling contract laboratory testing services
Knowledge of food and/or water testing services and the UK food industry
A scientific, technical or laboratory operations background
Experience representing a business at exhibitions, conferences or networking events
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
As Business Development Manager, you will develop new business opportunities while managing and growing existing customer accounts across our food and water testing services. You will build a strong pipeline, develop long-term relationships and ensure customers receive a responsive and high-quality experience.
Working closely with our operational, technical, customer service and marketing teams, you will develop tailored proposals, negotiate commercial terms and connect customers with the right testing solutions.
This is an excellent opportunity for an established laboratory sales professional, a strong account manager ready to broaden their business development remit, or a commercially minded laboratory professional seeking to move into a customer-facing career.
Key activities:
Develop and maintain a strong sales pipeline through research, networking and prospecting
Identify and secure new business opportunities within food and water testing
Manage and develop existing customer accounts to maximise growth and retention
Use gap analysis and customer insight to identify cross-selling opportunities
Build a structured contact plan and meet priority customers regularly
Prepare quotations and proposals and negotiate pricing and contract terms
Achieve agreed sales, revenue and margin targets
Maintain accurate customer records, opportunities and activity within the CRM system
Work collaboratively with marketing, operational, technical and customer service teams
Provide market intelligence, competitor insight and customer feedback
Represent Intertek at industry exhibitions, conferences and networking events
Deliver proactive communication and an excellent customer experience
