Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

Overview

We are supporting a leading engineering consultancy looking to appoint a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join their Glasgow office. This is a key leadership position, offering the opportunity to take ownership of major projects, mentor engineers, and contribute to the growth of the team.

Role Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design delivery of building services projects across sectors including commercial, residential, healthcare, and mixed‑use
• Take responsibility for project performance, ensuring delivery to quality, budget, and programme
• Produce and review detailed design calculations, specifications, and drawings
• Design systems including HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, and public health
• Ensure compliance with UK building regulations, CIBSE guidelines, and British Standards
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams
• Support business development, bids, and client engagement

Requirements

• Proven experience as a Senior or Principal Mechanical Design Engineer within building services
• Strong technical expertise across HVAC and mechanical systems design
• Track record of leading projects and managing teams
• In‑depth knowledge of UK regulations and industry best practice
• Strong communication and leadership skills

Qualifications & Professional Development

• Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
• Working towards or Chartered (CEng) via CIBSE or IMechE (essential)
