About the role

Due to ongoing growth, our Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering (BBGE) team is seeking an experienced Contracts Engineer.

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the planning, design, and execution of piling projects, ensuring that all work is completed to the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. There are several projects in BBGE’s pipeline spread over the UK that require the support of a Contracts Engineer to ensure their successful delivery.

What you’ll be doing

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead and manage the civil piling aspects of a project, including planning, design, and construction phases for the piling works;
  • Develop and review project plans, specifications, and construction drawings;
  • Coordinate with project managers, design engineers, and other engineering disciplines to ensure seamless project execution;
  • Conduct site inspections and assessments to ensure compliance with project specifications, quality and regulatory requirements;
  • Ensure that all engineering activities adhere to industry standards, best practices, and company policies;
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks and challenges throughout the project lifecycle;
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment, promoting continuous improvement and professional development;
  • Oversee and coordinate internal teams and subcontractors to ensure effective resource management;
  • Ensure all construction activities comply with contractual obligations, design specifications, drawings, and the Project Management Plan (PMP);
  • Develop and review construction method statements to promote safe and efficient execution of works;
  • Prepare and manage all site documentation required for project delivery, including PMP, PVPMP, ITPs, and Work Package Plans (RAMS);
  • Contribute to project planning and scheduling to optimize delivery timelines;
  • Monitor productivity and delays, analyse trends, and recommend corrective actions;
  • Apply and uphold Health, Safety, and Environmental procedures as outlined in project plans, fostering a culture of safety on site;
  • Ensure all works are executed in compliance with HS&E legislation and site‑specific plans. Lead the preparation and review of risk assessments;
  • Promote and support behavioural safety initiatives across the site;
  • Monitor progress, report performance, and ensure achievement of project milestones within assigned responsibilities;
  • Proactively identify and resolve engineering and construction‑related issues;
  • Manage construction records, including O&M manuals and as‑built drawings.

Who we’re looking for

The following qualities and experience are required to fulfil the requirements of the role:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people at all levels across the organisation and externally;
  • Strong IT skills – focused on Excel, Word, PowerPoint;
  • 2+ years’ experience in the construction industry;
  • Experience in delivery of civil engineering contracts on various scales;
  • Ability to manage multiple teams efficiently;
  • Ability to manage multiple scheme costs;
  • Ability to manage Health and Safety including Behavioural Safety;
  • Ability to lead, communicate and influence others to deliver targets;
  • Possess SMSTS or SSSTS;
  • Hold a CSCS card.

The following qualities/experience are desirable:

  • Experience working for a piling, ground engineering or civils subcontractor;
  • A Civil Engineering degree (or equivalent).
