About the role

We're looking for a Locum Consultant Paediatrician with special interest in cardiology and neonates to join our team.

This role is a 10PA Consultant in Paediatrics with a special interest and experience in Paediatric Cardiology and Neonates, delivering multidisciplinary acute care within Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

Main duties of the job

The primary aim of the Paediatrics Department is to provide the best possible quality of acute medical care for newborns and older children. The role includes:

  • Providing emergency care as part of the on‑call rota (1 in 11 on-call each weekend and weekday).
  • Acting as Paediatrician of the Week and Neonatologist of the Week.
  • Leading General Paediatric and Cardiology clinics.
  • Supporting the Neonatal lead and participating in SPA and DCC activities.
  • Attending department governance and audit meetings.
  • Supervising junior doctors and nursing staff.

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential)

  • Full GMC registration at the time of application
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
  • MD/PHD or equivalent medical qualification
  • Safeguarding Children Level 3
  • Valid BLS training
  • Valid APLS and NLS training

Knowledge (Essential)

  • Evidence of achievement of competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice.
  • Clinical knowledge and expertise in General Paediatrics and Neonatology, including managing and supervising patients in a Level 2 Neonatal Unit.
  • Experience of robust audit/research within the last 3 years.
  • Evidence of teaching experience within the last 3 years.
  • Clinical knowledge of cardiac problems in infants, children and young people.

Desirable

  • Evidence of relevant academic achievement (e.g., degrees, awards) within the last 3 years.
  • Evidence of relevant research (presentations, publications) within the last 3 years.

Skills (Essential)

  • Excellent written and spoken English for effective communication with patients and colleagues.
  • Ability to provide a complete employment history.
  • Skills to safeguard children effectively.
  • Skills in practical procedures appropriate to Paediatrics and Neonatology.
  • Clarity in written and spoken communication and the ability to adapt language appropriately, especially with children.
  • Ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams.
  • Experience supervising and teaching doctors in training.
  • Basic IT skills.
