An exciting opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with proven team leadership experience to take ownership of an established mechanical design function within a growing, highly specialised engineering business.
Our client is a successful UK-based engineering and automation specialist, designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke factory automation, special-purpose machinery, packaging and manufacturing equipment, conveyors, robotics and vision inspection systems .
With an established operation and an international customer base, the business delivers complex automation solutions across a wide range of industries, and continues to develop its UK and overseas operations.
The role is fully site-based at the company's North Gloucestershire facility, between Cheltenham and Tewkesbury. The location is rural and not served by public transport, so your own transport is essential .
The Role:
Reporting to the Engineering Director, the Mechanical Design Manager will lead an established mechanical design team while remaining hands-on with mechanical design .
This is a key role within the engineering function, with responsibility for ensuring the department consistently delivers high-quality, practical and commercially effective engineering solutions, on time and on budget.
You'll provide technical direction and day-to-day leadership to the design team, manage workloads and resources, oversee design quality and standards, and drive continuous improvement across the department.
You'll also work closely with Project Management, Electrical Design, Controls, Manufacturing, Procurement, customers and suppliers, ensuring mechanical design activities integrate effectively throughout the complete project lifecycle.
Key responsibilities:
Lead, manage and develop the Mechanical Design team.
Remain hands-on with the design of special-purpose machinery and bespoke automation equipment .
Plan and manage departmental workload, resources and project priorities.
Oversee mechanical design activities from concept through manufacture, assembly and commissioning.
Maintain high standards of engineering design, drawings, BOMs, design reviews and documentation.
Ensure designs are practical, accurate, safe, manufacturable and commercially effective.
Monitor project progress, identify risks and resolve issues before they impact delivery.
Set departmental and individual objectives and KPIs, conducting performance reviews and supporting team development.
Identify skills gaps and training requirements and help develop the team's technical capability.
Drive continuous improvement, standardisation, efficiency and improved ways of working within the design department.
What we're looking for:
This is a role for an established mechanical design professional who has already demonstrated the ability to lead people as well as deliver technically challenging engineering projects .
You will need:
Proven mechanical design experience as well asexperience leading or managing a Mechanical Design team .
Strong working knowledge of 3D CAD (such as Autodesk Inventor) .
Experience designing bespoke machinery, automation, special-purpose machinery, robotics or similar engineered equipment .
Experience taking projects from concept through design, manufacture, assembly and commissioning.
Strong understanding of engineering drawings, BOMs, design reviews and engineering standards.
Excellent IT and communication skills.
The ability to manage multiple priorities, solve problems and hold yourself and others accountable.
A collaborative approach and the ability to communicate confidently with colleagues, customers and suppliers.
A strong commitment to health & safety without shortcuts.
Professional, articulate and trustworthy, with the ability to represent the business positively.
Fluency in English is essential; a second language would be advantageous. You must also be legally eligible to work in the UK. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
