The post holder will build upon existing work within the group, working closely within the exiting computational team and help develop our existing packages into a cohesive, accessible and sustainable collection of applications for image analysis and research data management. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the unit’s research and software development, specifically in the area of data, analytics, algorithms and AI for Cancer Research. A central objective of the position will be to translate research methods and prototype software into robust, well documented and accessible tools for cancer research and clinical trials. These applications will support pathologists and researchers in the IPU who may have limited computational experience, enabling them to apply reproducible image-analysis workflows. This will require close engagement with end users to understand scientific requirements, design intuitive interfaces and improve the software in response to user feedback.About youThe successful candidate must have a degree in data analysis/computer science/health informatics or similar relevant field, with strong database, GUI and asset design capabilities, as well as programming skills (please see JDPS for full list of requirements).Department/Directorate InformationThe Integrated Pathology Unit (IPU) is a joint venture between The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and the Royal Marsden Hospital (RMH), and led by Deputy Director Dr Tom Lund, alongside Director Manuel Salto-Tellez. The IPU is a tissue-based laboratory with the mission to develop complex and highly quantitative approaches to FFPE tissue analysis (wet lab and in-silico) in the space of translational and clinical research, and thus is a globally recognised deliverer of clinical research and early biomarker adoption into diagnostic applications. To meet these goals, the IPU deploys state-of-the-art tissue-based profiling such as single-plex immunohistochemistry (IHC), RNA in situ hybridization (ISH), IHC/Immunofluorescence multiplexing (mIF) and spatial transcriptomics and proteomics, together with multi-scan imaging and digital pathology/artificial intelligence biomarker quantitation. This approach is applied to well-curated cancer sample cohorts (from routine diagnostics or from clinical trials) to a) explore the clinical relevance of biomarkers and pathways; and b) identify the best quantitative delivery of biomarker analysis. The IPU works in a coordinated manner with other programmes in ICR and RMH carrying out tissue-based analysis, and it is expected to serve as a go-between for academia, healthcare, and industry. The work specifically involves identification of biomarkers of clinical relevance; clinical validation of molecular pathways; key technical capacity to work with large clinical and clinical-trial cohorts, including tissue microarray construction, as well as IHC/RNA-ISH/mIF testing. This is complemented with experience in open-source development and off-the-shelf use of tools for computational pathology analysis. The Integrated Pathology Unit is mainly based in the Centre for Molecular Pathology (CMP) on the Sutton site of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.Biomedical Research Centre - Integrated Pathology Unit What we offerA dynamic and supportive research environmentAccess to state-of-the-art facilities and professional development opportunitiesCollaboration with leading researchers in the fieldCompetitive salary and pensionWe encourage all applicants to access the job pack attached for more detailed information regarding this role.
