This is a key operational leadership role responsible for directing safety interventions, overseeing risk management activity and influencing operational decision making to improve safety outcomes.As the primary safety authority for your allocated locations, you will support garage leadership teams, strengthen local governance and drive continuous improvement in local safety culture, behaviour and standards.What you'll be doingOperational Safety AccountabilityLead workplace health and safety and road-risk performance across allocated garagesOwn the safety risk profile of allocated garages and ensure effective and sustainable controlsEnsure safety performance targets are met through consistent oversight and interventionProvide updates and insights to senior safety leadership when requiredGarage Safety Local GovernanceChair depot safety meetings and monitor local safety improvement plans.Ensure garagemanagement maintains strong safety arrangements and complianceDrive consistent application of the organisation's Safety Management SystemEscalate significant risks or systemic failures through the appropriate channelsWorkplace Health & Safety Performance LeadershipEnsure risk assessments and safe systems of work are robust and effectively appliedLead responses to workplace safety concerns or compliance gapsOversee engineering, contractor and garage safety risk controlsIntervene where operational standards fall below expected levelsRoad Risk & Driver Safety PerformanceLead road safety improvement activity, including collision reduction initiatives.Oversee behavioural and telematics data to identify trends and target interventionsEnsure route risk assessments and operational reviews are completed and acted uponChallenge and support garage management where road safety performance declinesIncident Investigation & Corrective Action OversightLead investigations into serious or high‑potential incidentsIdentify root causes and systemic weaknessesApprove and support corrective and preventative actions, ensuring they are delivered and effectiveEmbed learning and improvements locallySafety Performance Monitoring & Risk EscalationMonitor safety KPIs across your garages and act on emerging risksInitiate targeted improvement activity where performance deterioratesRequire remedial action when risk thresholds are exceededEscalate unresolved or material risks to senior leadershipOperational Influence & Stakeholder EngagementAct as the lead safety expert for garage General ManagersInfluence operational planning to ensure risk controls are built into decisionsWork collaboratively with Trade Unions, Transport for London and external stakeholdersRepresent operational safety in client or regulatory discussionsWhat we're looking forNEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent) and IOSH Managing Safely (minimum)Proven experience managing health & safety in operational or safety‑critical environmentsDemonstrable experience in road risk or driver safety performance managementStrong background in incident investigation and root‑cause analysisAbility to influence operational leaders and drive safety improvementsExperience implementing Safety Management Systems at site or operational levelQualification or formal training in Road Risk Management, Transport safety or incident investigation (desirable)
