About the role

Project Manager – Rail & Infrastructure About the role We're recruiting on behalf of a growing project management consultancy operating across the rail and transport infrastructure sector, working with clients including HS2, Network Rail-affiliated organisations, Midlands Rail Group, and long-standing train operating company partners. This is a client-side project management role. You'll represent the client's interests on projects ranging from a few hundred thousand pounds to £10 million, either interfacing with third parties delivering work on the client's behalf, or managing the delivery of client-commissioned construction projects directly. Projects are almost always customer-facing — new stations, station improvements, walkways, and similar passenger experience upgrades. What's in it for you * Salary: £50,000–£60,000, depending on experience (likely mid-£50s for the right candidate) * Pension: 5% employee / 8% employer contribution * Annual leave: 26 days plus bank holidays, with a genuinely flexible approach * Travel & expenses: mileage covered for client site travel, meals and hotel stay covered when overnight travel is required, and pool cars available for high-travel roles * Hybrid working: typically client office 1–2 days/week, company office once a week (Thursdays), remainder flexible * Team culture: twice-yearly company-wide team events (summer and winter), including past trips to a private glamping site with hot tubs * Genuine progression opportunity in a business that has grown from a single founder in 2019 to over 30 people today, with a clear trajectory into larger, multi-year framework contracts About the business A small but fast-growing infrastructure project management consultancy, founded in 2018 and built around a strong, behaviour-first culture. The team values people who get involved, take ownership, and build genuine relationships with clients — technical competence matters, but so does being someone people enjoy working with. What you'll be doing * Representing the client throughout the lifecycle of infrastructure projects * Managing third-party contractors delivering work on client assets, or overseeing direct project delivery on the client's behalf * Helping shape project scope, supporting the move into contract, and managing that contract through to completion * Splitting time between the client's office, the company's Birmingham office (typically one day a week, Thursdays), and remote working, the exact mix depends on the client and project What we're looking for * 4–5+ years' experience in a project management role within rail, transport, or broader infrastructure — ideally at "scheme PM" level and ready to step up * A background with Network Rail, a train operating company, National Highways, or similar infrastructure organisations is ideal, but candidates from other infrastructure-adjacent sectors with strong transferable skills are equally welcome * A relevant qualification such as PRINCE2, APM, or PMQ is preferred, though not essential if you can demonstrate equivalent hands-on experience * Confident, self-sufficient, and comfortable running a project with minimal oversight — this isn't a role for someone who needs a lot of hand-holding * Strong client-facing communication skills; able to build relationships, flag issues proactively, and manage day-to-day delivery * A driving license is a strong advantage given regular travel to client sites, though not mandatory if you're well-connected by rail Interested candidates should apply with an up-to-date CV. Strong preference for candidates already based in or able to easily travel to the Birmingham / East Midlands corridor, or along the Birmingham–York–London route.
