PDRA in Host Compatibility and In Vitro Biological Models
About the role
Can living fungi be used to form in-situ manufactured electrode arrays within the brain?
Any additional information you require for this job can be found in the below text Make sure to read thoroughly, then apply.
That is the ambitious question we want your help answering as part of an Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) funded programme at the University of Sheffield.
We’re looking for aResearch Associate in Host Compatibility and In Vitro Biological Models to join an interdisciplinary programme led by Dr Thomas Paterson, bringing together expertise in bioengineering, microbiology, neuroscience and translational neurotechnology.
You will develop and apply in vitro and ex vivo biological models to test how candidate fungal materials interact with neural, glial, immune and barrier-relevant systems.
The challenge is to understand whether engineered fungal candidates can coexist with biological systems without unacceptable toxicity, damaging inflammation, neural dysfunction or barrier disruption. You’ll investigate host compatibility, inflammation, immune clearance, secreted-factor effects and neural-cell health, as well as developing BBB and neurovascular models.
We’re particularly interested in people with hands-on experience in areas such as mammalian cell culture, neural or glial models, immunological assays, microscopy, tissue models, organoids, BBB/endothelial models or related in vitro systems. Experience with in vivo or ex vivo models would be useful, but you do not need to arrive with every technique.
You’ll have the opportunity to develop new assays, screen candidate materials, analyse quantitative biological readouts and help make the experimental decisions that determine where the programme goes next.
Most importantly: if you don’t have every skill listed but you’re enthusiastic about the science and excited by the question, we still want to hear from you.
