About the role
Sonomatic is seeking a highly skilled Inspection Engineer (RG2 Category 2) to support PX Group operations in St Fergus. This role is suited to a technically strong inspector who thrives in a fast‑paced site environment, is motivated to drive the adoption of new inspection technologies and efficiency improvements working closely with Sonomatic Inspectors and the PX Integrity and Operations Teams.

Friday: 07:30 – 12:30
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain regular communication with the client, Sonomatic Inspectors, PX Integrity, Operations, engineers, supervisors, and other contractors to provide inspection support.
- Approve all Inspection Work Packs and Written Schemes of Examination (WSE) at Category 2 level.
- Provide expert guidance on integrity issues, defect assessment, and follow‑up repair work, including issuing inspection queries and repair orders where required.
- Fully endorse all integrity reports in accordance with inspection manuals, procedures, regulations, and recognised international standards.
- Ensure all inspection activities comply with PSSR, industry standards, NDE procedures, and client acceptance criteria.
- Verify inspection results for accuracy and reliability, ensuring data is suitable for further analysis by the Integrity Team.
- Manage the identification, reporting, and close‑out of defects and anomalies, recommending appropriate mitigation measures.
- Provide inspection and integrity input into plant shutdowns, outages, and major maintenance events.
- Ensure all inspection activities follow RBI recommendations, WSE requirements, inspection procedures, and approved methodologies.
- Apply sound engineering judgement in assessing defects and recommending additional inspection or remedial actions to the PX Integrity Team.
- Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for new inspection technologies, improved efficiency, and enhanced inspection quality.
- Champion high standards of Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ), ensuring all SHE requirements are met during inspection activities.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Degree preferred; minimum HNC in a relevant engineering discipline.
Training & Certifications
- Minimum RG2 Category 2 appointment.
- Incorporated Engineer status (or working towards).
- Industry qualifications in ASME, API, and/or EEMUA.
- NDT qualifications advantageous but not essential however understanding of NDT Applications essential.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Cat 2 appointed role.
- Proven experience inspecting pipelines, pipework, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, fired heaters, and mechanical protective devices.
- Background in fabrication, design, commissioning, maintenance, turnarounds, or operations on high‑hazard sites.
Proficient with computer‑based systems and inspection technologies.
