SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) – Secondary School
Location: Birmingham
Contract Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Start Date: ASAP
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated SENCO to join a vibrant and inclusive secondary school community in Birmingham. This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate education professional who is committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of need or background, is supported to achieve their full potential.
The successful candidate will play a key role in leading and developing SEND provision across the school, working collaboratively with staff, families, and external agencies to create an environment where all learners can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. This role is ideal for a committed practitioner who shares our values of high expectations, inclusion, respect, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and manage the school’s SEND provision, ensuring compliance with the SEND Code of Practice and promoting inclusive teaching and learning across the school.
* Identify and assess students with additional needs, implementing effective support strategies and interventions to improve outcomes.
* Work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to ensure personalised learning approaches are embedded throughout the curriculum.
* Monitor and evaluate the progress of students with SEND, using data effectively to inform planning and intervention.
* Build strong relationships with parents, carers, external professionals, and local agencies to provide coordinated support for students.
* Support and advise colleagues on adaptive teaching strategies, classroom support, and inclusive practice.
* Contribute to safeguarding, wellbeing, and behaviour initiatives that promote a positive and nurturing school culture.
* Deliver training and professional development opportunities for staff to strengthen SEND awareness and best practice across the school.
* Maintain accurate SEND records, EHCP documentation, and ensure statutory requirements are met effectively.
* Participate fully in the wider life of the school, including events, enrichment activities, and whole-school improvement initiatives.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
* Previous experience working within a secondary school SEND setting
* Strong knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and inclusive education strategies
* Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills
* A commitment to raising achievement and supporting students’ holistic development
* The National Award for SEN Coordination (or willingness to work towards it)
