Engineering Practice Lead – Transformation & Engineering Excellence
Contract | Sheffield | 3 days per week | £550 p/day +
A leading global organisation is seeking an experienced Engineering Practice Lead to support large‑scale engineering transformation initiatives across multiple technology domains. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in complex environments, enjoys driving maturity uplift, and is passionate about improving engineering culture, standards, and capability
The Role
As an Engineering Practice Lead, you will play a key role in shaping and uplifting engineering practices across software, data, operations, and infrastructure teams. You’ll partner with senior engineering leaders, HR/L&D, and workforce teams to influence hiring quality, strengthen communities of practice, and embed best‑in‑class engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead delivery across engineering pods, working closely with engineers and technical stakeholders
- Design and implement AI-driven tools and solutions to improve engineering productivity and workflows
- Apply practical experience using AI tools such as Claude (preferred) or Copilot within a real delivery environment
- Build and evolve career development frameworks and progression roadmaps for engineering teams
- Support and improve hiring structures, ensuring alignment with capability needs
- Help shape and embed best practices, standards, and ways of working across teams
- Identify opportunities to increase efficiency and output through automation and AI adoption
- Act as the bridge between delivery, engineering, and strategic capability development
Key Requirements
- Proven experience as a Delivery Lead or Technical Delivery Manager
- Strong understanding of engineering environments and software delivery lifecycle
- Background that includes some level of hands-on engineering or technical exposure
- Demonstrated experience using AI tools in a current or recent role (essential)
- Experience working closely with engineers and influencing technical teams
- Ability to design and implement process improvements and capability frameworks
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
- Experience working within cross-functional or pod-based teams
Highly Desirable
- Experience using Claude (preferred) or Copilot to build internal tools or improve workflows
- Financial services or fintech background
- Experience in engineering transformation, capability uplift, or organisational design
- Exposure to distributed or global team environments
