Quantity Surveyor – Placement / Graduate Opportunity

Asgard Builders Ltd is an established and growing construction company specialising in high-quality residential extensions, refurbishments and new-build homes across the West Midlands.

We are looking for an ambitious Quantity Surveying student, placement-year candidate, recent graduate or postgraduate who needs practical industry experience to complete or support their degree and wants genuine responsibility within a growing construction business.

This is not a placement where you will simply shadow somebody else. You will work directly alongside the company directors and site teams, gaining hands-on commercial and contractual experience across live residential construction projects.

Working Pattern

The role will operate on a flexible hybrid basis.

You will be expected to attend the office each morning to review priorities, live projects, procurement requirements and commercial matters with the directors and wider team.

Following the morning office meeting, the remainder of the working day may be spent:

* Working from home

* Visiting live construction sites

* Meeting subcontractors or suppliers

* Attending client or professional-team meetings

* Working from the office where required

This structure is designed to provide flexibility while maintaining regular communication and strong involvement with the operational side of the business.

The Role

You will be involved in:

* Producing and reviewing project cost plans and budgets

* Preparing subcontractor and supplier enquiries

* Comparing quotations and negotiating prices

* Measuring works and producing take-offs

* Preparing valuations and payment applications

* Monitoring project costs against budgets

* Managing variations and additional works

* Assisting with tender submissions

* Procurement of subcontractors and materials

* Tracking project profitability

* Producing commercial reports for the directors

* Visiting live construction sites across the West Midlands

* Reviewing and administering JCT contracts

* Understanding contractual obligations, payment provisions and notices

* Managing variations and contractual change under JCT

* Assisting with interim valuations, payment notices and final accounts

* Monitoring contractual dates, extensions of time and relevant notices

* Identifying contractual and commercial risks before they become disputes

* Liaising with clients, architects, contract administrators and subcontractors on contractual matters

Who We’re Looking For

Ideally you will be studying towards, or recently completed, a degree or postgraduate qualification in:

Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related construction discipline.

Knowledge of JCT contracts is important. Practical experience is desirable, but we would consider a strong candidate who has studied JCT contracts academically and is keen to develop their knowledge quickly in a live contracting environment.

We are more interested in your attitude, commercial awareness and willingness to take responsibility than simply how many years of experience you have.

You should be:

* Confident with numbers

* Commercially minded

* Highly organised

* Comfortable interpreting construction contracts

* Familiar with JCT forms of contract

* Comfortable communicating with subcontractors, suppliers, architects and clients

* Confident using Excel and construction software

* Able to recognise commercial and contractual risk

* Self-motivated and capable of working independently

* Comfortable working from home and travelling between sites

* Willing to take responsibility

* Keen to develop quickly within a growing company

Package

Salary / placement pay: Negotiable depending on experience and ability
