Help connect a town that already cares

We’re recruiting a Community Communications Officer to lead how the Council connects with residents, partners and community groups. This is a role for someone who enjoys building relationships, and bringing people together.

You’ll help make local democracy more visible, accessible and meaningful. That means turning council decisions into clear, engaging stories, but also showing up: attending meetings, listening, capturing what matters, and helping different voices be heard.

This is hands-on, people-focused communications:

  • Being part of the community – attending meetings, working with local groups and building trusted relationships
  • Bringing people together – helping connect partners, support conversations and strengthen collaboration
  • Making meetings matter – listening, capturing key points, and turning discussions into clear, accessible updates
  • Telling the story of Totnes – creating content that reflects what’s really happening in the town
  • Making the Council easier to understand – translating decisions into plain English and meaningful messages

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is approachable, confident and comfortable with people from all walks of life
  • Enjoys being out in the community as well as working digitally
  • Can listen well, capture detail and communicate it clearly
  • Is organised and reliable, able to attend meetings and follow through on actions
  • Has strong writing and digital skills, with a creative eye for content

Local government experience helps, but it’s your ability to connect with people and communicate clearly that really matters.

The details

  • 24 hours per week (across 4 days)
  • Based in Totnes Town Centre
  • Regular community meetings and occasional evenings/weekends required

For an informal chat about the post please call Totnes Town Council to speak to Catherine, Town Clerk.

For more information and to apply please visit the Totnes Town Council website.

ONLY COMPLETED COUNCIL APPLICATION FORMS will be considered at shortlisting stage. xwzovoh CVs alone are NOT accepted.
