About the role
Position Overview
Consultant in Cardiology with interest in Transoesophageal Echocardiography and Adult Congenital Heart Disease. This is a full‑time replacement Consultant Cardiologist post based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI). The post holder will join a team of eleven cardiologists.
Location and Services
The post is based in the Department of Cardiology at ARI. NHS Grampian serves a population of 620,000 including patients from NHS Orkney, NHS Shetland. The Department is part of the Acute Services Directorate, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, NHS Grampian. Services include a 10‑bed Coronary Care Unit, a 30‑bed inpatient cardiology ward, a 12‑bed day case ward, and a busy outpatient department with general cardiology, chest pain, complex heart failure, arrhythmia, valve disease, cardiomyopathies and adult congenital heart disease clinics. The Echocardiography department performs around 12,000 transthoracic echos per year and offers transoesophageal, contrast, bubble, 3‑D, and stress echo. Advanced imaging modalities – Coronary CT, Cardiac MRI, PET, myocardial perfusion scintigraphy, MUGA, and DPD scanning – are available.
Responsibilities
The clinical duties include:
- Commitment to general adult cardiology receiving (currently a 1:10 basis) including weekend ward rounds.
- Three outpatient clinics per week, including general cardiology and adult congenital heart disease clinics supported by a specialist nurse.
- Weekly transoesophageal echocardiography list and provision of imaging expertise to the general MDT and TAVI MDT.
- Providing imaging expertise within the multidisciplinary team and considering an interest in stress echocardiography or nuclear medicine.
Qualifications and Training
Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required (the licence must be in place before starting).
UK trained applicants should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from the date of interview.
Alternatively, applicants should possess a CESR / CESR (CP) or be eligible for a locum consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive appointment is made. In locum employment, an application for CESR and entry onto the Specialist Register can be made.
