Senior Mechanical Engineer

Essentia, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to provide professional leadership and technical authority for mechanical infrastructure across the Trust’s estate. The role will safeguard patient and staff wellbeing by overseeing technical standards, statutory compliance, risk management and resilience across critical mechanical assets and systems.Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is one of the country’s largest and busiest NHS trusts, comprising Guy’s, St Thomas’, Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Royal Brompton and Harefield, alongside community services in Lambeth and Southwark. Its clinical services are supported by a complex, operationally critical estate where safety, resilience and the patient experience are paramount.Essentia is the Trust’s operational and infrastructure delivery group. Working across the Trust’s hospital, community and partner sites, it brings together engineering, estates, capital development, facilities management, digital technology and other essential services to maintain safe, resilient and high-performing healthcare environments.The successful candidate will demonstrate substantial expertise in the management, maintenance and development of complex mechanical infrastructure within large, operationally critical environments. This should include experience across heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, medical gas pipeline systems, steam and pressure systems, and water systems. They will lead estate assurance and compliance, support asset lifecycle planning and infrastructure investment, and drive continuous improvement in safety, resilience, performance and value for money.Candidates should hold relevant professional qualifications and training, ideally including a mechanical engineering degree and professional membership of IMechE or CIBSE, or Chartered Engineer status, alongside Authorised Person duties and safe systems of work experience in areas such as medical gas pipeline systems, critical ventilation and pressure systems. Strong knowledge of healthcare engineering standards, including Health Technical Memoranda, will be important.
