About the role

As Senior Project Engineer (Civils), reporting to the Programme Engineering Manager, you'll have responsibility for leading technical assurance within the Structures Renewals Framework. You will be joining a dynamic team delivering large volumes of diverse works, working collaboratively with stakeholders. You will be leading and managing a team, providing technical leadership and support to develop Project Engineers, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. You will use the appropriate engineering standards and processes in relation to design and construction on all projects, ensuring they comply with legislation, Railway Group and Network Rail company standards.

Salary: The starting salary for this position is £55,596 rising to £67,813 per annum.

Your experience and skills

Key Accountabilities

• Develop and assure engineering solutions from concept through to implementation and handback, applying Network Rail systems and processes to deliver safe, high-quality and cost-effective outcomes.
• Manage, lead and develop a team of Project Engineers to support the design, construction, commissioning and other technical activities on projects.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with Route Engineers, Contractors Design organisations and Maintenance to facilitate successful project delivery.
• Lead technical assurance activities across all projects, applying risk-based engineering controls and undertaking reviews and audits to ensure compliance with legislation, Railway Group Standards, Network Rail Standards and project governance requirements.
• Apply relevant techniques and procedures of quantified and qualitative risk assessment and HAZOP analysis to all relevant projects and check whether the environmental aspects of all relevant projects are managed in accordance with Network Rail Environmental Policy.
• Provide technical advice to the Route Engineers and project teams in respect of all construction activities, testing and commissioning, and site supervision ensuring compliance with applicable legislation including CDM Regulations.
• Challenge design solutions and promote value engineering opportunities to maximise safety, constructability and performance in line with project budgets.
• Undertake CDM duties of Designer and Principal Designer as required
• Monitor the competency of contractors' design, construction and specialist personnel.
• Undertake the duties of Project Engineer.
• Carry out the duties of Designated Project Engineer (DPE).
• Undertake accident investigations when remitted to by the relevant designated competent person.

Essential

• Significant experience in Civil engineering, ideally with involvement in construction and design projects across multi discipline areas
• Technical qualifications to at least HNC level or equivalent in Civil engineering
• Membership of a relevant professional institution (ICE, IMechE, IET)
• Experience of contracting
• Knowledge of structuring safety cases in support of projects
• Knowledge of safety management and quality assurance
• Understanding of the arrangements required for the independent assessment of works
• Accident investigation experience

Desirable

• Six Sigma Yellow Belt
• Chartered status or equivalent in Civil engineering
• Appreciation of environmental issues in engineering works
