Proclinical is working alongside an internationally recognised drug discovery organisation who are seeking an experienced Associate Principal Scientist to provide scientific leadership across innovative preclinical discovery programmes focused on kidney disease, nephrology, chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, renal fibrosis and progressive renal disorders.This is a senior scientific leadership opportunity for an experienced pharmacologist with expertise in renal disease biology and translational drug discovery. You will play a key role in advancing novel therapeutics from target validation through candidate selection while working closely with biotechnology and pharmaceutical partners developing next-generation treatments for kidney disease.The Opportunity Working within multidisciplinary drug discovery teams, you will be responsible for the design, delivery, and interpretation of pharmacology studies supporting programmes across:Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD)Diabetic NephropathyRenal FibrosisGlomerular DiseasePodocyte BiologyProteinuriaAlbuminuriaTubulointerstitial FibrosisKidney InflammationFibrotic Kidney DisordersMetabolic-Renal DiseaseCardio-Renal DiseaseYou will contribute to target validation, mechanism-of-action studies, translational biomarker strategies and efficacy assessment, supporting progression of novel therapeutics into development.Key Responsibilities:Lead and scientifically direct in vivo pharmacology programmes focused on renal and nephrology indicationsDesign and oversee studies utilising relevant disease models of:CKDAKIRenal FibrosisDiabetic Kidney Disease (DKD)Proteinuric Kidney DiseaseGlomerulonephritisNephropathyKidney InflammationProgressive Renal DiseaseDrive translational pharmacology strategies linking preclinical findings to clinical outcomesSupport target validation and mechanism-of-action studies across pathways implicated in:FibrosisInflammationImmune-Mediated Kidney DiseaseMetabolic DysfunctionTissue RemodellingRenal Injury and RepairAnalyse and interpret efficacy, pharmacodynamic and biomarker data to guide programme decisionsCollaborate with medicinal chemistry, DMPK, translational science, biomarker and safety teamsPresent scientific recommendations and project updates to external biotech and pharmaceutical clientsMentor scientists and contribute to the development of innovative in vivo and translational capabilitiesAbout You Essential ExperiencePhD in Pharmacology, Physiology, Nephrology, Biomedical Sciences or related discipline, or equivalent industry experienceSignificant experience in in vivo pharmacology within pharmaceutical, biotechnology or CRO-based drug discovery environmentsStrong expertise in renal disease biology and nephrology researchExperience working within one or more of the following areas:Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD)Diabetic NephropathyRenal FibrosisKidney InflammationGlomerular DiseaseProteinuriaAlbuminuriaPodocyte DysfunctionTubular InjuryFibrotic DisordersProven ability to design, interpret and lead complex preclinical pharmacology studiesExperience influencing scientific strategy and programme progression decisionsKnowledge of UK regulations governing in vivo researchExcellent communication and stakeholder engagement skillsHighly DesirableExpertise in translational nephrologyBiomarker identification and validationRenal functional endpoints including:eGFRAlbumin-Creatinine Ratio (ACR)Urine Protein BiomarkersRenal HistopathologyExperience with pathways including:TGF-?
