About the role

This role would see you at the heart of the design and assurance of Containment Level 3 & 4 laboratories and other sensitive government facilities - a chance to apply your expertise where it directly supports national security and critical assets. Key aspects of the role Provide specialist security engineering advice for high‑containment laboratories and other secure government buildings. Review and shape perimeter security, including Hostile Vehicle Mitigation, and recommend targeted enhancements. Lead and support security risk assessments, threat analyses and vulnerability studies for high‑risk environments. Develop, review and assure security design documentation (protective security strategies, technical specifications, assurance reports). Work closely with architects, engineers and programme teams to embed security throughout the project lifecycle. Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, standards and security frameworks. Advise on digital engineering security, including security‑minded BIM and secure information management. Support design reviews, governance, construction assurance, commissioning and operational readiness. Provide senior‑level input on emergency planning, secure operations and high‑threat scenario preparedness.What our client is looking for Substantial experience as a Security Engineer / Security Specialist / Security Adviser in the built environment. Background supporting highly secure, regulated or high‑containment facilities. Strong grasp of physical, technical and operational security design. Proven experience in risk assessments, threat analysis and security assurance. Working knowledge of key standards and guidance such as: Schedule 5 of the Anti‑Terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001 ISO 19650‑5:2020 (security‑minded approach to BIM) ISO 23234:2021 (security for BIM and built assets) Familiarity with the NPSA Surreptitious Threat Mitigation Process Ability to explain complex security requirements to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders. Strong analytical skills and sound decision‑making in high‑consequence environments. Desirable Experience with government departments, national security organisations, scientific research sites or emergency response bodies. Knowledge of secure digital engineering processes and high‑security BIM environments. Background advising on critical national infrastructure protective security. Membership of the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists (RSES) or similar, and expertise in areas such as: Protection against forced entry Hostile Vehicle MitigationKey conditions Contract length: 12 months Working model: Hybrid, with 2-3 days per week on site in Porton Down IR35: In scope Rate: £681.16/day Security clearance: Current SC clearance is strongly preffered
