About the role

Transition Teacher (Post-16 SEN) Location: Colchester, Essex Salary: M1 - M6 + SEN Allowance (dependent on experience) Hours: Full-time, term time only (39 weeks plus training days) Start Date: September 2026 About the Role We are recruiting for a dedicated and experienced Transition Teacher to support learners aged 16+ within a specialist SEN setting. This role is ideal for a teacher with Key Stage 3 and above experience who is passionate about preparing young people with autism and additional needs for adulthood. You will work within a structured and supportive environment, helping students develop independence, life skills, employability awareness, and confidence as they transition into further education, training, or employment. Key Responsibilities Deliver high-quality teaching in line with Teachers’ Standards Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons appropriate for post-16 learners Support students with autism, learning difficulties, and SEMH needs Focus on developing independence, life skills, and social communication Create a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment Work closely with a multidisciplinary team including therapists and support staff Manage behaviour using consistent, positive strategies Monitor and assess progress using SEN frameworks including P Levels and National Curriculum Support students during unstructured times such as breaks and transitions Prepare learners for future pathways including employment and further education Candidate Requirements Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Degree-level qualification Experience teaching Key Stage 3 and above, ideally including post-16 learners Experience within SEN, particularly autism or learning disabilities Strong understanding of EHCPs and differentiated learning Knowledge of SEN assessment frameworks (P Levels and National Curriculum) Confident supporting behaviour and emotional regulation Full UK driving licence (essential) Right to work in the UK (no sponsorship available) Personal Qualities Passionate about supporting young people with additional needs Patient, resilient, and empathetic approach Strong communication and teamwork skills Motivated to support students into adulthood and independence Salary and Benefits M1 - M6 salary plus SEN allowance Term-time only working pattern for strong work-life balance Ongoing CPD, training, and career progression opportunities Wellbeing support including counselling services 24/7 GP access and employee assistance programme Retail discounts and financial wellbeing support On-site parking Supportive leadership and collaborative team Why Apply Opportunity to specialise in post-16 SEN and transition support Small class sizes with high staff-to-student ratios Strong focus on independence, employability, and life skills Supportive and well-resourced environment Chance to make a lasting impact on young people’s futures Safeguarding This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check and safer recruitment processes.
