An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Software Architect to join a large, well‑established aerospace and defence organisation working on complex, highly secure systems. This role is based in Newcastle and offers a hybrid working arrangement.


Location: Newcastle – hybrid working (approximately 60% onsite)

Contract Details

  • Contract length: 12 months (likely extension)
  • Hours: 37 hours per week
  • IR35: Inside IR35

Pay Rates

  • £52.32 per hour PAYE
  • £70.00 per hour Umbrella


The Role

As a Software Architect, you will work closely with system architects and delivery teams to translate business and operational requirements into robust, secure and scalable software architectures. You will provide architectural leadership across the full lifecycle, from early design through to delivery and review.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and own software architectures for complex systems, balancing performance, security, reliability and compliance
  • Translate high‑level requirements into structured, maintainable architectural designs
  • Identify technical risks early and define appropriate mitigation strategies
  • Work within an Agile/Scrum environment alongside developers, testers and product owners
  • Provide hands‑on architectural guidance to engineering teams
  • Select and influence suitable technologies, frameworks and design patterns
  • Ensure solutions meet both functional and non‑functional requirements
  • Produce clear architectural documentation and design rationale
  • Support and contribute to technical and architectural reviews


Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Software Architect on complex systems
  • Strong background in cloud‑based architectures and modern technologies
  • Understanding of DevSecOps principles
  • Experience working in secure, regulated or compliance‑driven environments
  • Ability to communicate architectural decisions to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
  • Strong collaborative mindset with a passion for supporting and mentoring teams


Security Requirements

  • SC Clearance preferred
  • Candidates must be eligible for SC clearance
  • UK nationals only
