About the role

Help turn complex Defence programmes into practical outcomes

At Darter, we work with organisations across Defence, National Security, Government, Aerospace, and Technology to tackle complex problems, shape strategy, and deliver meaningful change. Our mission is to strengthen the UK's security, resilience, and prosperity through thoughtful advice, practical action, and responsible use of technology. Our culture is collaborative, supportive and curious, giving talented people the opportunity to grow, contribute and make a difference.

We're looking for a Strategy Consultant to work on digital and strategic challenges across UK Defence and national security. You'll join a small, growing team, working directly with
clients to solve problems and make progress.

Candidates must be based in or around Bristol or London and comfortable with regular travel to client sites across the UK.

What you'll do

Shape and structure client problems, helping to define scope, objectives, constraints and the key questions to explore.

Get stuck into analysis across a range of inputs and sources, turning complexity into clear options and recommendations.

Lead and contribute to stakeholder interviews, workshops and working sessions with senior military, civil service and industry figures.

Produce high-quality deliverables, briefings and papers that stand up to senior scrutiny and support real decisions.

Play an active role in planning and managing delivery, including actions, dependencies, risks and milestones.

Work closely with colleagues to challenge thinking, refine advice, and maintain quality and coherence across outputs.

Requirements

What we're looking for

Essential

Around three or more years' experience in consulting, strategy or a similar advisory role.

Comfortable with ambiguity, and able to turn complex or incomplete information into clear next steps.

Clear written and verbal communication, including with senior stakeholders.

Sound judgement and a disciplined approach to delivery.

Able to obtain UK Security Clearance.

Nice to have

Experience in Defence, government or the wider public sector.

Curiosity about digital, data, technology or AI.

Experience with governance, operating models or organisational change.

If you don't tick every box on the essential list but think you could grow into the rest, please apply anyway — see the note at the end.

Benefits

What you'll get

Salary of £50,000 to £70,000, depending on experience.

    Pension matched up to 10%.

Performance and profit-share bonus, plus share options.

    Unlimited holiday.

Private health insurance, including dental and optical cover.

A dedicated personal development budget and protected time for learning.

Flexible, remote-first working, with in-person time when it matters.

Time off for volunteering and matched charity donations.
